Panasonic Z1 wireless HDTV appearing in US retailers

Jul 4th 2009 1:39AM (Engadget HD)
Some of the new LCD's are great ... esp. from Samsung. That is, if you view sitting dead center of the screen. As you move of axis more and more the picture quality decreases more and more. Also, don't kid yourself, plasmas are going to be around a long time.

Great plasma .... lousy looks. I hate the silverish bezel. Also, disappointed they don't offer a 65-incher in this model. In spite of the very cool wireless features and ultra thin profile of the Z1, I'll be buying the 65-inch V10 instead. Life is cruel.

TiVo survey hints at new name, direction for Series4 boxes

I hope the new Tivo HD for DirecTV comes soon. After all the horror stories I've heard re. the troubles and crashes with DirecTV's DVR, there's no way I'm going with them ... no matter how much I want to view HD. In over ten years of extensive use with the exact same Tivo unit, I have had near perfect operation .... except for three freeze-ups which were easily and quickly fixed by a reboot.

How would you change Canon's EOS 5D Mark II?

Jan 3rd 2009 6:20AM (Engadget)
Why doesn't the 5D ... and all but the smaller digital cameras ... have an articulating LCD screen??? These type screens are found on virtually all camcorder but are seldom seen on still cameras any more. These articulating screens add very little to the camera's overall size and weight, but provide much more flexibility of use. E.g., easily shooting over crowds or low-to-the-ground shots; self shots where you can see yourself; and, most important, the screen can be stored facing inside the camera for maximum protection against screen damage and smudges.

If these articulating screens are so important for camcorders, why are they not important for still cameras????? Not having these screens is the only reason I don't already own a Canon or Nikon digital SLR ... although I'm very happy with my Canon S5 IS with it's articulating screen.

Canon's SX10 IS 20x wide-angle zoom and 14.7 megapixel G10

Sep 20th 2008 10:05AM (Engadget)
I'm continually amazed and pissed that Canon .... and every other camera maker .... has dropped the articulating LCD .... aka swivel, twist-&-turn, etc. LCD. I was hoping to see it return with the G10, but am happy to see it on the new SX models. And it's great to see it on the new Panasonic G1.

Why do all camcorder come with an articulating LCD and yet they are very rare on still cameras? These displays have the same advantages with cameras as with camcorders. In fact, I'd bet that camcorder buyers would be very upset if camcorders started coming out without an articulating display. I would have purchased a Canon DSLR ... or Nikon DSLR ... a long time ago if it had one of these ever-so-useful articulating displays.

Besides being able to very easily and accurately shoot low ground shots, high over-the-crowd shots and self portraits, I especially like that I can lock the screen-side of the display inward for full protection when carrying the camera slung over my shoulder, or in my pocket .... with full protection of the screen from bangs, scratches or breakage. Also, the addition of an articulating display adds very little cost, weight or size to the overall camera. This is such a no-brainer.

Re. Huh? Undisclosed 1080p camera from Canon? Might this not be the real news tidbit in the article?

Personally, I don't know what I'd do with video > 1080p. Sure, I'll take it I guess, but what would I display it on? My home IMAX theater?

It could be displayed on a plasma that can display 1080p.

Pioneer Signature Series 50- and 60-inch plasmas now shipping

Actually .... plasma prices have been coming down significantly each year. However, the Pio Signature plasmas are the most expensive plasmas this year .... but, even so, they are selling very well.

Cablevision, common sense win network DVR appeal

Aug 5th 2008 7:02AM (Engadget)
I'm ever amazed that these network and movie exec's still don't get it, and that they have to be dragged, kicking & screaming, into the 21st Century.

First it was radio that was going to destroy the movie industry ... then it was TV ... and then the VCR. Now both the movie and TV companies are screaming that the DVR is going to take all their profits away. What they fail to learn from history is that radio, TV & VCR actually made them more money ... a lot more!! And so will DVR if they'll just wake up and embrace the future.

Yes, the old paradigm of TV commercials is quickly dying, so they'll just have to figure out a new one. There's no way they're going to stop this, so instead they should hop on board and help create the new paradigm instead of trying to hold back a tsunami.

How is it that these guys get paid such big bucks and yet are so blind to the future?

Samsung Costume hard drive concept appeals to the ladies

If you weren't so rude and angry maybe you'd of actually understood my point ... which was that style and good looks are not just a woman thing. I'm ever amazed how rude some people are when they're anonymous. Maybe because this kind of behavior face-to-face can get you bitch slapped or an ass kicking. Have a nice day.
