GDC 2010: From student game to success

Hence 'conference' instead of 'expo'.

Mafia II trailer needs guys like you

Mar 6th 2010 3:29AM (Joystiq)
60 fps in a trailer of a multiplatform title? Why don't you see this more often?

Maybe it shows that the PC version is not FPS-capped, but a cinematic experience like Mafia would actually make better use of a slower FPS for that movie-like touch.

Pre-order Dawn of War 2 expansion, get Saints Row 2 for free

Feb 19th 2010 4:29AM (Joystiq)
But the PC port of Saints Row 2 is really, really bad. It uses some bizarre, anti-background loading technology that disallows any loading while you play so whenever you drive past a street corner the game stops and starts loading the next area. Plus, the car controls are very iffy when played with a keyboard.

But hey, it's free.

PAX 2008 hands-on: Valkyria Chronicles

Sep 5th 2008 5:15AM (Joystiq)
Looks as intriguing but not as boring Ring of Red, the old PS2-release-era alternate WWII timeline, diesel-mecha turnbased roleplaying game.

Now if only japanese devs were informed of the existence of Jagged Alliance...

Joystiq interview: LittleBigPlanet's Pete Smith and Jim Unwin

I've always been wary of custom content in console games due to memory restrictions. Way too often you can't make complex enough maps to satisfy your insane needs so the whole feature feels tacked-on. LBP, having been developed from the get-go to be a level creating application (featuring gameplay elements) this issue seems to have been fixed.

Look for Super Mario World 1-1 some time after the launch, I'm going to give it a shot.

Joystiq E3 hands-on: Silent Hill: Homecoming

Jul 18th 2008 4:18AM (Joystiq)
Frankly, I'm disappointed. The emphasis on combat with action moves (spinning pipe strike?? pouncing off the floor like a ninja??) and a health bar seems like the developers didn't get what's the point of Silent Hill games. Creepy, almost anguishing atmosphere is ruined if you're required to beat down every monster you see, effectively diminishing the scary factor of game. They're also handling Pyramid Head, who should be relevant only to James's story in SH2, as a Hollywood monster that 'needs to be in the game because hey, it's Silent Hill'.

Valve reveals new cast for Left 4 Dead

Aren't they just reskins of the old characters? Does this mean you can choose your character's clothes or is this just new design?

If so, I liked them better before. Bikers need a beard.

MGS animated short is 'Cold Blooded'

Jul 8th 2008 5:52AM (Joystiq)
As illtrooper mentioned, the plot has some holes. Like the glaring one about Boss's motivations. Why did he have to infiltrate that snowclad base if he knew it was an ambush? Also I don't see Snake sending out someone else to be killed in his place. He's a hero with a sense of honor and a gullible fool.

I liked the style of the short, though.

My Baby Girl/Boy video scares us away from parenthood

I for one look forward to pitting infants against each other in blood and gore filled melee mayhem.

Bebé a bebé.

Tonight's most American otaku music video

Apr 18th 2008 5:49AM (Joystiq)
Sure, it's a catchy pop song but that doesn't stop it being offensively stupid. "You're [sic] the only one for me" is followed by a chorus part for "(I would like to engage in sexual intercourse with following fictional characters) Yuna and Zelda and Chi..." What exactly is showing the supposed main character's sincere feelings for the love of his life?
