Free indie games "magazine" launches

Sep 6th 2006 6:01AM (Joystiq)
Great stuff, my only complaint about the design is that the cover is really bland. they should have gone with some of the really striking imagery from the previews section like the stuff in Buccaneer, DefCon or Mr. Robot.

The previews were the best part - we rarely hear much about indie games that have been released, let alone upcoming ones.

GDC: A quick chat with XBLA's Greg Canessa

Live Arcade on 360 rocks, whereas on Xbox (1) it was kinda sucky because it wasn't built into the dashboard.

As well as some great old classics (I'm hoping for some of the old cave shooters turning up on there!) I think it's fantastic that they are supporting smaller indie developers. My only worry is that they'll just end up like Real Arcade and have about 3 different game archetypes (arakanoid, match3 and word match) with 8 bazillion different skins on them (arkanoid atlantis, arkanoid egypt, arkanoid ancient greece - yawn...). I'm hoping they really push out the boat to attract some of the indie developers who produce games with a bit more depth. Imagine if they could get uplink and darwinia (www.introversion.co.uk) on there - I think that would be a major coup for MS. I really want them to look inro games like Cletus Clay (www.squashysoftware.com) and stuff by Moonpod (www.moonpod.com) - I've been holding out hopes for a console port of Starscape for years!

Of course, now MS has shown the way, you can bet Nintendo and Sony have their own incarnations of live arcade on the way, so I wonder how long they can maintain the lead in the console direct download sector...
