Video: Miniature, operational electric drill perfect for smurfing smurfs

Jun 29th 2009 1:51PM (Engadget)
Is there a miniature tool box to go with it? If not, no sale.

Windows 7 official pricing announced, limited pre-orders start tomorrow

Jun 29th 2009 12:00PM (Engadget)
Any idea what version supports dynamic disks? Only Vista Business and Ultimate did, so i'm kind of confused. I don't really want to pay for Windows 7 Ultimate if I don't need to.

Acer introduces Aspire M5800 and M3800 desktops, H235H display

Jun 28th 2009 6:48PM (Engadget)
I still find it strange that now even cheap computers come with so much ram. These days I can barely find a use for 2GB on XP. I only upgraded to 4GB for Vista. Probably not even really needed.

I remember back in 1998-2000 or so still owning a cheap 13" CRT. I was asking around online and doing research and everyone told me Acer (and Viewsonic) made the best monitors back then. Are they still decent? I really wouldn't know.

Right now I have a Dell 24" and it's the best thing ever. I bought a second display for another PC and it's terrible compared to the Dell. The poor viewing angles just ruined it. Before the Dell I had a 19" Viewsonic and it was pretty good, if a bit more expensive than most displays.

I think if a 30" LCD monitor comes down to $600 i'll buy one. Might be another year or so. These days 24" just isn't enough space for me.

Meijer's brand new $99 (shipped) Blu-ray player brings joy to skinflints everywhere

Jun 19th 2009 12:19PM (Engadget HD)
Cheap HDTVs don't always mean they're junk. I wish people would stop saying this. Sure, house brands usually are, but there are a few brands out there that are cheap and still very good. Of course if you get a Samsung and Sony you'll get a few more extras and a better remote.

I have a Vizio 1080p TV upstairs as a secondary TV for games and it's picture quality is nearly as good as my $3000 Sony. If my Sony dies i'm going to think twice about forking over another 3 grand.

Pretty much every single company selling TVs now has a "cheap" model anyway.

I think it's worth spending extra money for a blu-ray player though. I'd have my doubts if this player is any good. Hopefully they at least supply firmware updates.

Ask Engadget: Best PC speakers for the office?

Jun 12th 2009 1:06AM (Engadget)
JBL Duet speakers are amazing for the price. I doubt you can find anything better sounding for $45.
I had some Klipsch speakers before, but I got tired of all the wires and them taking up space.
I listen to music a couple hours a day and have no problems with them. If you want loud overdone bass, get something else.
I actually find them better than a few other 50-$100 speakers i've tried, such as some Creative speakers.

Only negative of these is that they feel extremely cheap! There is also no headphone jack and the volume control knob is hard to turn.

They have the new JBL duets sound, but my suggestion is for the first version.

Microsoft kills 'coffin' policy, time to pack your RRoD Xbox yourself

Jun 8th 2009 6:27PM (Joystiq)
Thanks for the worthless reply. It's for a media server and I already have a PS3 in the basement.

It was either go with a WD media center for $100-$130 or spend some extra money and just get an Xbox 360 and be able to play games as well.

I'll pretty much buy every system that has games on it I want to play. Unfortunately right now the games I want to play are on the Xbox 360.

Microsoft kills 'coffin' policy, time to pack your RRoD Xbox yourself

Jun 8th 2009 6:14PM (Joystiq)
Last night I got my first ever RROD in over 2 years. My game froze up and I had to power down. Started up again by loading my game and it froze up. Seems it just overheated. For the past few months though i've been getting disc read errors when the disc is perfectly clean. Shutting down and restarting fixes it. Luckily all these problems are minor compared to some problems people have.

I just bought the new Xbox 360 for a bedroom, so it looks like i'll be swapping them out.

So what is the most common cause of RROD? Overheating? I bought one of those intercoolers. Maybe that will help. Too bad everything has to be so loud to play games..

EGM sold to original founder, resumes publication this year

May 29th 2009 11:28PM (Joystiq)
I'm so glad EGM is back. Whenever I go to the magazine stands I'm left with magazines such as GamePro and Nintendo Power. I'll pass on those. I ordered an EGM subscription in December and was forced to get some Xbox magazine instead, too bad.

I still remember the days when EGM was like a half an inch thick. This was back during the NES games.

DieHard Gamefan was always nice because they always seemed to cover a lot of Japanese releases. Not sure whatever happened to that magazine.

Microsoft touts 30 million Xbox 360s sold, 20 million Xbox LIVE members

May 29th 2009 12:18AM (Engadget)
I think the Xbox 360 Arcade has helped them a lot. These days not everyone can afford a $300 Video game system. A hard drive is not a must have item if you only need to save a game! Unlike what most people think, a game save doesn't usually need a 60GB hard drive! I have the original 20GB version and it's just fine for me. I also think that many people are buying them for something other then playing games. It makes a good media server for playing music and watching movies. I was considering a $125 piece of hardware to play just movies and decided to just spend an extra $75 and play games too. I must be crazy, I just purchased a second Xbox 360 just for watching H.264 movies on an external hard drive! I bet a lot of people are getting one because of Netflix as well.

Right now I have both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. I originally bought the PS3 because it was once the cheapest Blu-ray player. Both systems have good games, but 90% of the time i'm using my Xbox 360.

The biggest negative though is that you need to pay $100 for a Wireless Adaptor for the Xbox 360 when this is a standard item on the PS3. It amazes me that not even the Xbox 360 elite has this included. I'm offline on my second Xbox because I refuse to fork over $100 for a $10 item.

Director del Toro predicts 'Citizen Kane of games' will appear in next decade

May 27th 2009 11:40AM (Joystiq)
I've heard several people complain about the graphics and I just don't get it. I don't think i'm blind and i'm always impressed with the graphics. They're not quite as good as say Gears of War 2 or Bioshock, but as good as Half Life 2, if not better. Some of the best graphics in the game are in areas that are not part of the main storyline. It makes me wonder if a lot of the complainers are people who use a lower end graphics card with all the default settings. I'm using an Xbox 360 to a 1080P TV and it still looks pretty good. The main story only took about 35 hours for me, but i'm at 65 hours now and still haven't checked out every area in the game. I haven't even started with any expansion packs! Very few games seems to last this long.

I thought a game couldn't top Half Life 2, but this is pretty close. I guess it's not perfect, but a game like Fallout 3 only comes around every 10 years it seems like.
