Impressions: Alpha Protocol

Apr 7th 2010 7:02PM (Joystiq)
I'm pretty pumped about it... I trust Obsidian and Avellone. Combine this with Fallout New Vegas (FO3 + basically FO1/2 == win?) and it should be a great year for non-fantasy RPGs.

DS Daily: The year of the Nintendo DSi

My questions for the DSi:

1) Will we see a working flashcart for it? I don't pirate, per-se, but I load all my carts' images on a flashcart so I don't have to use the real cart. I love that!

2) Did they make the shoulder buttons more reliable? My kids and I have each killed one DS with worn-out shoulder buttons.

Yeah, I kept getting booted, also. Then, I was actually presented with a list of my old My Nintendo registered titles, and for each one that I complete the survey for, I get another 30 coins. But then I was kicked again... You might want to give it a couple of days...

Missed a word there... I mean to say a separate booklet/insert that says "Register your software" on the front and has a computer-printed PIN on the back (of the form XXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXX)

Only games that have that separate "Register your software" that contain a computer-printed PIN number are eligible. I looked through my Gamecube games and none seemed to have those. This is mostly only newer (DS/Wii) official Nintendo first-party releases (though Brain Age 2 had one also).

The site seems borked right now, though -- I was able to enter one game, got coins, then got kicked and now can't log back in. I requested a password reset, go the email, but the password reset page isn't working, either. Sigh.

Philosony: Give a sackboy a level and he'll play for a day...

Dec 14th 2008 1:04PM (Joystiq Playstation)
My friends and I geeked out for almost a week on LBP. But as others have said, once you play through the set of expertly created official levels, it's too much work to find good gamer-made levels. If it takes me 30 minutes of digging to find ONE good level, then I play and finish that level in 10 minutes, uhhh... not worth it.

Also, making levels is decidedly work for many. It take a huge amount of work to make a well-crafted level. (I think the proof of that fact is evident in that MM hasn't produced a level pack of their own yet!) We spent about 2 hours futzing, and eventually just got frustrated and quit. It was clear it would take several days to a week to make a decently-long, bug-free level.

Other games suffer from this, where their attempts to be "open" instead make them bland (e.g. the Neverwinter Nights series, more recently Far Cry 2). It's extremely rare to design an open game like this that is successful (The Sims), and those games rely on professionally designed add-ons more than user-created stuff.

Mirror's Edge and LBP are both platform games. Yes, they're both very unique for platformers. I tried both, even though I don't like platformers, generally. Both made me go "yep, that's a lot of timed running and precise jumping. No thanks."

The reviews I've read make me believe this sucker is a winning cross between Bioshock and Resident Evil!
