PS3 Fanboy review: Ninja Gaiden Sigma

Jul 13th 2007 12:59AM (Joystiq Playstation)
It is worth mentioning though that the game even running in 1080i/p modes still has the same 720p resolution. And the game always prefers 720p over 1080i. Check it out. Nevertheless I like the idea of supporting basically all modes. Btw, it really is a must have.

Kaz Hirai promises us the PS3 isn't in production yet

Aug 22nd 2006 11:41AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Just as an update, but Sony commented Kaz's statements as being missunderstood by gamespot.com. Sony is still shooting for the initially announced 4 million til the end of 2006.

Kaz Hirai promises us the PS3 isn't in production yet

Aug 21st 2006 12:50PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Even though Kaz was not very specific about this, but there is a slight difference between production and assembly. And I guess he is referring to the assembly. While production lines at IBM and other major suppliers are already on the way to produce parts of the PS3 (Cell, RSX, BD drives, printed curcuit boards, etc.) the actual assembly of those parts hasn't obviously be started.

As the Cell, RSX chip and the BD drive are the most critical parts here, I am not really concerned about the assembly. This is more or less standard and shouldn't be an issue for Sony.

Is 1080p really worthless? Now it's personal

Aug 18th 2006 11:42AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Sponge, you better read that wikipedia article once more. And you sure know the difference between film and games play, right.

As I've already said in #7, 1080i deinterlaced is not the same as 1080p 60Hz which is the framerate that is used with this standard. 1080i has an effictive framerate that is half of that, which is ok for movies when deinterlaced but not for past paced games. The other topic of deinterlacing is that this is something taking place in your TV and depends on the quality of that feature, whereas 1080p is native and doesn't require this kind of post processing.

It's really kind of funny how people here can argue that lower resolution and framerates are better. Ask some PC gamers and they might explain that to you.

What is true though is that the whole processing chain from beginning to end supports the quality of images. The PS3 is just one element in that but an important one.

The question is Cage...at what cost when? And yes it is worth the trouble.

Deinterlacing an 1080i image is not the same as 1080p especially for games. As this is not so much of an issue for movies due to the lower native framerate of 24Hz. For games running on 60Hz the deinterlaced image or better motion is inferiour.

The real question and that's always the same thing when it comes to the PS3, you can not compare on todays standards. In the range of 1 to 2 years, prices for tv sets change drastically and you have to stick to a hardware for the next four years that is not capable of leveraging those to the full extend.

If you whould have the choice between a XBOX 360 upto the highest standard or one that is not, which one would you take?

PS3 is weighed and judged by Joystiq

@tom I don't know where are you taking your info from, but have a look at this interview with IBM's Tom Reeves
http://www.reed-electronics.com/electronicnews/article/CA6350202.html?industryid=21365

Reeves: There are a lot of chips with six cores operational, and we’ve been thinking about whether we should really throw all of those away. We also have a separate part number for chips with all eight cores good. The stuff that’s going to be for medical imaging, aerospace and defense and data uses eight cores.

Cell with 8 cores working have a different part number (from the one used in the PS3) and will of course cost substantially more. Again: there is no redundancy. Sony is using the "cheaper" cells for the PS3.

5. Architecture: Cell is too unique and could cause developer problems
7. Even with redundancy, PS3 might have high defects at launch

Just those two tell me those you guys have everything but a clue. By now, IBM has already provided a ton of material and development tools and libraries to use the Cell as it should be used (check out their Cell website) and a whole community around the Cell beyond the PS3 already exists (other then the Xenon CPU) Re. what you call redundancy: there is nothing like this in the Cell. Each Cell has 7 working SPEs and there is no redundant one, basta. The 8.SPE gets disabled by IBM during production and can not be used in any way. Btw, this has been said a million times ;-)

PS3 to make or break Sony forevermore

Aug 2nd 2006 8:06AM (Joystiq Playstation)
* Sony made money with every consoles so far.
* Microsoft so far only lost money big time.
* Sony talks about getting back the money they have invested into the PS3 (dev, prod) within 5 years with a couple of years still to go after that.
* Microsoft talks about being positive from an operating profit point of view in 2008 with a product lifecycle close to 5 years.

Big difference if you ask me, but you don't ask of course ;-)

E3 cancelled for next year and beyond [update 4]

I guess it must Sony's fault ;-)

PlayStation 3 game prices revealed from Best Buy

Jul 19th 2006 9:05AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Sony reps have stated before that next gen game prices are in general at the same level as of today, with a chance of a slight increase.

What are you expecting from Best Buy or any other retailer? They wanna be on the save side. Better decrease the price tag afterwards. I've seen other figures on the net. So far no consistency, which tells me, they havn't been announced yet by Sony. So take those with a grain of salt.
