Verizon confirms original Droid will be getting second Froyo update

Aug 13th 2010 7:20PM (Engadget)
@anyop What has been lost between 2.0 and 2.2? I'll give you a hint: almost nothing. Flash support is probably one of only a few significant changes between 2.0 and 2.2. A Motorola Droid at 2.0.1 is still very functional and will run 99% of Android Market applications.

Actually, a surprisingly low number of apps actually *require* anything beyond Android 1.6 (I just phased Android 1.5 out one or two weeks ago with my application). Android 1.6 will still run the majority of applications on the Android Market.

How many iPhone 2Gs and first generation iPod Touches were lost in the upgrade to iOS 4? It's still "fragmentation" (except in that case, Apple did it on purpose).

Buy from a responsible manufacturer and you should be fine for a few years - Motorola and HTC have been relatively good in keeping their phones updated (Samsung, on the other hand, hasn't).

@homestar1217 Not necessarily. Android allows you to change the setting to MDPI and the launcher will compensate like this, so this isn't necessarily a higher resolution screen. Why do you think the icons are physically about the same size on a Nexus One (much higher pixel density) and on a G1 (much lower pixel density)? The icons on the G1 are 48x48, while the icons on the Nexus One (and most other 800x480 phones) are 72x72. If you used 48x48 icons on the higher resolution screen (as well as the lower resolution notification bar and other assets), it would appear exactly like this.

@lerxst The Droid 2 will be just as locked down as the Milestone.

Apple Peel 520 gets reviewed: turns your iPod touch into an iPhone, but quirks exist

@MysticLeviathan Even if the manufacturer of this product included the proper CDMA radios, only a user who would blindly abandon a perfectly fine Android device for Apple's walled garden would be naive enough to believe that Verizon would even consider willingly activating a device such as this on their network.

iPhone 4 unlock available now (update: video!)

Aug 4th 2010 4:51AM (Engadget)
@MysticLeviathan How could anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of cellular networks assume that it is the carrier that is causing the issues, rather than the design of the phone itself? You mean to say that, if you started with the same signal strength on both T-Mobile and AT&T, the iPhone on AT&T might drop more bars if you bridge the gap?

There is a drop of about the same amount of signal each time you cover the gap, no matter where you start on the spectrum.

There may be a tiny bit of difference that may manifest because T-Mobile uses different frequencies, but that's hardly related to the quality of the carrier.

Official: iPhone 4 jailbreak hits from iPhone Dev Team (updated with video)

@DouchePoet No amount of jailbreaking will ever open source iOS.

Android 2.2 upgrade for Droid X may already be trickling out, other Droids shortly?

@FatTonyTCL CyanogenMod 6.0 RC works fine on the Evo.
