Parting shots: Reeves expects PS3 to be dominant in 3-5 years

Apr 30th 2009 6:04PM (Joystiq)
You know what's funny, though. When Nintendo launches the Wii^2 in 2010/11, the PS3 will probably still have better graphics than their next gen console, it's MS that Sony should be worried about. At least in terms of performance.

I'm not bashing Nintendo, I own both the Wii and a PS3. I'm just being real.

Maybe Sony put in a second Cell CPU somewhere in there and it will get activated when MS launches their next console. OK, this is me not being real. Sony cannot hope to compete with MS with the PS3 for too long.

Kindle 2 first hands-on! (updated with video and impressions)

Feb 9th 2009 1:01PM (Engadget)
"""Wahhhhhh, it's too expensive! - It's new tech, it's fairly competitive with others on the market, but offers more, and you probably buy more expensive stuff without batting an eyelash."""

It IS NOT new technology!

""The screen is too small! - Changing the screen size would have meant more development/testing time, which means we probably wouldn't be having this discussion until at least a year from now. You can change the font size so it's readable. If the device got much bigger, I think avid readers would complain about portability.""

What? Are you serious? How does a bigger screen translate into more develoment time? If you removed the keyboard... wait, leave the keyboard on... check the borders on that thing. It was designed to hold a bigger screen. That's a waste of space.

I agree with you on the points of greyscale and the price of the books. (Color e-ink IS new tech). Now for the PDF support, with a larger screen it could be done easily. What Amazon doesn't want is users transfering their PDF tutorials, books and what not to the Kindle. Since there are a lot of PDF ebooks out there. This would mean loss of profit to Amazon.

Backlight could be a good option. If you read at home, you can use it and charge the Kindle overnight. If you're traveling, you can take a book light with you to avoid a dead battery. Simple enough.

No SD card support is just stupid. For people who like comics, manga, big PDF converted IT and training books; an SD card is a must.

How can you argue against having a removable battery? What was Amazon thinking when they decided to make it non user replaceable?

Amazon Kindle 2 announced: $359 on February 24

eddy: you'll be tremendously disappointed. The screen is so small, barely the size of a paperback. You'll stop using the kindle after a month.

I have the Sony PRS-500. I know, it has only a 4 gray scale screen, and less response time. But, the resolution is the same and it's just not comfortable to read for long on it. If you read fast enough, you'll be turning pages too frequently.

I kind of wish the new kindle would've been at least 8" diagonal and 1024 x XYZ resolution. Then it would be really worth the $360. This new version doesn't cost more than $100 to build.

Joystiq live from Nintendo's fall media summit

Oct 2nd 2008 8:32PM (Joystiq)
Well, yes... but not because everybody does it, it turns out to be something good. This practice slows down progress in the long term. New features are added constantly and it takes more time to come up with an innovative or greater development.

I could argue more about this, the point is that the DSi will make Nintendo release the next gen portable at least x number of years later than they should, and families who are on the economic rollercoaster shouldn't be exposed to this type of marketing. People fall for "getting the new gadget" campaigns to suffer the buyers remorse later.

I meant, enough for now, for this generation of portable gaming. Larger screens and cameras aren't reason enough to make consumers buy a new device so they can play several innovative games. Lots of consumers will have to buy a new console just to play the new games that use the camera(s) and SD card.

The economy in many parts of the world is not sound or prosperous any more.

The DS brought a bunch of whole new features to th portable gaming market. I can take the DS Phat to DS Lite transition, but not an DS Lite to DSi one. Sure Nintendo will defend themselves by saying that it's not a substitute for the DS Lite.. yeah sure! It is another SKU, in between $179 and $199, that many people will feel the need to buy.

Open your eyes people. This is just a rebadged DS Lite so Nintendo can print more money. The current DS Lite is enough, they better start announcing the next generation of portable consoles, instead of squeezing money out of us consumers.

The DSi should have been the original DS Lite, like the Wii motion plus and Wii storage should have been implemented since launch.

Does anybody else think like I do?

Nintendo DSi vs. PSP-3000 vs. iPod Touch, v1.0

Oct 2nd 2008 11:12AM (Joystiq)
How can anybody be content with the announced DSi. It just follows the useless accessory scheme by Nintendo. I own a DS and I'm happy with it, but Nintendo should be upgrading the CPU+GPU+RAM and screen res on the new DSi. Why buy a "new" system with slight bumped specs? It's like they're selling a new accessory integrated into the console so people would be all about getting the whole system just for some added functionality.

I like Nintendo, but I'm getting tired of these slight updates and must buy accessories. Next thing we know, the Wii HD will be the same Wii but with 720p in-game and 1080p dashboard resolutions, instead of the whole HD experience.

Thecus N5200 five-drive NAS

Mar 7th 2008 9:22AM (Engadget)
I was deciding on the Thecus n5200 Pro or the QNAP TS-409 Pro. Both seem like a good option and I read over at Thecus' page and WD's that some WD (YS series) drives needed a special firmware which would prevent them from being dropped from a RAID configuration. I really don't know if after upgrading the fw, the drives work flawlessly; the fact is that some WD drives are marked as being unstable in the official compatibility chart of the n5200 PRO

I don't know if you have this WD YS series drives, but many people appear to have a very stable platform with the N5200 Pro. Now, I'm not taking any sides, I just want to know assuming a stable environment of the Thecus, which one has the best features not considering the 5 vs 4 bay config.

Here are the links to the Thecus PDF and the official WD suport page. Hope this helps

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Toshiba sez it wouldn't change a thing, still thinks HD DVD is better

Feb 20th 2008 7:15PM (Engadget)
You fail to see beneath the ultimate of all the events up until now. Yes, we know that HD-DVD lured some studios; as well as we know BDA did the same thing. Ultimately, Sony/BDA bough out Toshiba too. Do you think that Toshiba is paying the full $835 million for the Cell facilities? Ultimately, everyone got bought out. That's just the way it is, forget about who is better. Next up Online HD vs. Blu-Ray... stay tuned.

Wii Worms not getting online multiplayer

Jan 16th 2008 9:27AM (Joystiq)
It's funny how WWP for the Dreamcast had online multiplayer (It was flawed, but none the less; we're talking 1.5 generations before the Wii). I guess I'll clean my DC and give it a spin just for the sake of old times.
