Scratch one grub (card)! Gears of War board game headed to retail

Jul 29th 2011 6:07PM (Joystiq)
@Qehb Fantasy Flight Games also made the Doom board game (based off Doom 3) which is the origin of the game mechanics. Oh, I almost forgot, they made the Warcraft 3 board game, Starcraft 2 board game, and the World of Warcraft board game. Also each of these has one or two expansions. With their experience in games like Tide of Iron and Tannhauser, I am surprised they haven't been approached to do a CoD board game.

Scratch one grub (card)! Gears of War board game headed to retail

Jul 29th 2011 6:01PM (Joystiq)
@RevolutionJ12 Welcome to the world of board games. Everyone complaining about the price needs to realize this is a professionally made tactical board game by a reputable studio (Fantasy Flight Games), and not some crappy roll n' move game ala the the Lost board game, Twilight board game, or Dexter board game. As you can see, there are a lot of components (figures, cards, dice, map tiles tokens), and all are made of high quality materials. Now, the MSRP for a table top game is typically $79 so this is not new. Yes, it's more than the game, but you have to factor in a smaller audience and more physical materials that need to be designed and (sometimes) custom manufactured.

@mythosengineer You realize it can work with any mouse based game, right?

FYI, if you pre-ordered Portal 2, the Potato Sack is $5 off (so $33.80)

Battlefield 3 gameplay footage, 'Back to Karkand' DLC confirmed

Ugh. I don't think it should count as "gameplay" footage when the shots are less than a second long.

Breach patch claims to reduce lag on PC

Feb 8th 2011 12:13PM (Joystiq)
@Dizazter I got the PC version. It was sorta fun at first, but they messed up on the mouse controls. Again, like with some other games, you have to go into the .ini file to turn off mouse smoothing as well as being able to lower the sensitivity. I don't know if it's cause I have a gaming mouse, but I had to lower the sensitivity on my mouse and in the game very low to get decent mouse sensitivity. Even then, the menu mouse was incredibly slow.

Lag was horrible as it's all player hosted games, and a reason I regret buying it. If I knew there weren't dedicated servers I wouldn't have bought it. Also three shotgun at point blank does not kill a person. The cover system is OK but it's clunky and clumsy to "attach" and "detach" from cover. The game also favors heavy players, as you only get XP from kills to buy perks and items, giving skilled players and unfair advantage at just being able to buy better stuff and have even more advantage over new or casual players.

Driver: San Francisco video walkthrough shows the art of car possession

Jun 22nd 2010 6:14PM (Joystiq)
@PolishMountainMan Yea, what's with all the Driver hate? Yea, the series went downhill after the first one, and Driv3r was nicley over hyped .

I know the Driver series was supposed to be all about realism, and the "body jumping cause it's all in his head" sort of ruins that, but that mechanic pretty much fixes the single gameplay issue thats plagued the entire "mission-based-driving-game" genre since it's inception: You make one mistake and you are SCREWED and have to start the entire mission over. Checkpoints helped alleviate that a bit, but still, you have to do the entire checkpoint flawlessly, or hope the developers put in enough checkpoints for you. One other mechanic recently is the rewind found in Grid and Dirt 2 which helps correct mistakes too.

I'm really looking forward to this, because at least they are trying to do something new with the game. I know being a ghost and becoming someone else isnt new (Geist, Prototype, Stubbs the Zombie), but I think this can save the series. (Plus the Deloran?! YES)

If you want realism, go get GT5.

Homefront trailer shows the softer side of insurrection

Other than the guy getting immolated, the flare and flame effects are amazing. I haven't seen any other game with effects that good yet.
