AT&T's new DataConnect Pass plans serve up data a la carte

I'm wondering if I should get Verizon's (or AT&T, I guess) data thingy because I'm a computer programming student who has to commute 3 hours a day to get to work, and I'd rather just do my homework in those 3 hours than listen to music or do whatever. All I need to do is use a lot of Google for looking up syntax, usage and other code snippets. I'm wondering if I should get that weekly or monthly deal. Good or bad idea?
