Not all games are art, and not all art are games. Simply because this mod uses the source engine to tell a story in a unique way does not make it a game. There is more to a game than just user input. There needs to be greater context to the user input. I'm all for games being considered art and not being overt about using popular game mechanics to do so, but this is not such an example.
If you come away from experiencing Dear Esther, in the 30 minutes it takes you to walk through it, feeling like you've just played a game, then you need to re-examine exactly what a game is. There is absolutely no interaction with the environment outside of walking. You don't run, you don't jump, and you don't manipulate any objects. All of this was intentional and deliberate on part of the game developers. The source engine is nothing but a mere vessel to tell a narrative and to have you experience it. This does not make it a game outright.
Gaming journalists need to grow some brains and realize that this is NOT a GAME. Call it anything else, but simply because you have to manually walk in the environment does not make it a game. I understand why gaming journalists are covering this but label it what it actually is: an artistic and new way to tell a story.
