Sep 19th 2010 4:58PM (Massively)Free for All: So, what does "MMORPG" mean?
Sep 8th 2010 9:05PM (Massively)When speaking of MMORPG as an acronym/term, it has ALWAYS (used to) talk about games with persistant worlds, where users actually effected the game world and change the shape of it. New content was added weekly. There was always something NEW to do. It implied that there was roleplaying involved... NOT just sitting around talking funny, but your character actually playing a role in the world. Not everyone was the same generic adventurer with some side jobs.
Now everything is just a big static theme park with new attractions being added every half a year. Everyone has the same goal in the game in most of them. Bad games thrive and inventive ones struggle as they go against the new grain of things.
Everyone seems to think "MMORPG" means a game with a server that can contain thousands of people where you can go and grind your way through stuff with a bunch of people or by yourself. It used to mean so much more.

Sep 5th 2010 3:42AM (Massively)Too BIG.
There is way too much UI real estate wasted by giant borders and fonts that can't be resized the way I want. I have a giant huge screen resolution and yet a small percentage of the screen is actual playable area due to the lack of customizability of the UI.
All you people talking about fonts being too small.. need glasses. Though I feel your pain in that you can't really make the UI your own.

Aug 20th 2010 1:31PM (Massively)My above comments weren't in support of the gentleman winning a large settlement (i'm undecided on that front, another topic altogether). Whether or not he won was irrelevant. My point was that his claims were not without merit.
Also, someone above said something along the lines of "he was playing for 10 hours a day for 5 years, maybe he shoulda clued in and did something about it"..
I don't think you understand what addiction is. We throw the word around pretty loosely these days, so I don't blame you. But in this context, we're talking about what is pretty much a developed mental illness. Part of addiction is usually losing sight of what's healthy for us individually and no longer being able to make that call.
NCsoft sued for making Lineage II too darned addictive
Aug 20th 2010 1:10PM (Massively)And no, it's not because things are "fun and interesting". We were talking about addiction, and the use of pavlovian award systems and social engineering aimed at creating addiction.
