Interview: Valve's Doug Lombardi

Jul 3rd 2009 6:20PM (Joystiq)
I agree that LFD2 came quick and doesn't seem full price worthy, but Valve is the last company that should be boycotted. They are probably the #1 most ethical and customer loyal developer and publisher out there. There is a reason HL episodes take too long; because they care more about making a quality game than hitting a holiday deadline. We get the better game, period.

NPD: Video gaming surpasses moviegoing

May 21st 2009 4:04PM (Joystiq)
No, I completely understood that this is typical PR spin.It is comparing two things which could be comparable but ignoring a HUUGE variable that changes everything. Gaming isn't beating watching movies, gaming is beating specifically going out to theaters, which is only a small chunk of movie watching.

Yes, semantics troll, that is clearly exactly what I said.

Tons of people played games without purchasing games, whereas going out to the movie means you are spending money(stealing discounted). If they add in watching dvds or movies on tv , or specify purchasing games this changes a lot.

SCEA registers trademarks for 'Starhawk' and 'Dominion'

Replace "German board game" with "American card game" and I agree with you. It's been the new hotness since release, no reason for someone not to grab the liscence if those other board/card games are selling.

Joystiq E3 hands-on: Fable 2

THANK YOU for explaining the objectiveness of the article in your opening words. It is very important to understand where a reviewer is coming from when hearing their viewpoints on a game. When I am giving a review I always discuss my interest in the genre, history with the franchise, gut feelings based on previews, etc. How can you really trust a review if you are unaware the reviewer is not interested in the genre, or a diehard fanboy?

This is one of the most important things about the current review "system" that I hate and needs change. Thanks again and keep it up.

Far Cry 2 single player could last 25 hours! No 50! ... No 100!

May 30th 2008 6:11AM (Joystiq)
Having played Far Cry and Crysis I can tell you that Crytek's definition of open-world gameplay is basically "linear gameplay except the corridors are wide enough to get lost in and waste 30 minutes walking back to the path."

Team Fortress 2 PC update balances classes, introduces tournament mode

Mar 3rd 2008 2:46AM (Joystiq)
Well, to focus on demoman; the grenade launcher is both frustrating to use and play against. It instant kills on direct hit, but if it touches the floor it does virtually nothing because it's splash damage and area is so small. As a heavy, for example, you are a huge target and get killed by this thing all the time, but using it against most other classes is like playing the lottery. Too hard to direct hit and the non-direct hits are barely worth it.

For the sticky bombs. I think they really need to balance out how many bombs affect the overall explosion. One sticky should not 1-shot a player. And on the other end, setting up 8 sticky bombs in a close area barely gives any benefit over setting up just a couple.

On a side note, most classes have lame secondary weapons. It's really not very fun to have a random shotgun or pistol. They should make class specific secondary weapons.

Team Fortress 2 PC update balances classes, introduces tournament mode

Mar 2nd 2008 4:03PM (Joystiq)
Although I applaud Valve's attempt at balancing classes by doing something that won't disrupt gameplay heavily and piss lots of people off(like Blizzard), I don't think these exact changes will help enough. The obvious problem is that they can just focus more on picking up ammo drops which isn't that hard.

But more importantly, there is just some design flaws in some of the games weapons, especially demoman's, that need to be addressed. That is a much longer rant not meant for a quick post response though.
