Opinion: Why I can't go beyond the first 5 mins of Call of Duty: World At War

Nov 10th 2008 4:25PM (Joystiq)
>but I would hope for parts of the experience to not be so black and white.

I'm afraid it was. The Japanese Empire of the first half of this century was a force of evil and violence and that is a fact.

As for Hiroshima as horrible an attack as that was I don't think if it were reversed, if the Empire had split the atom first and bombed Seattle that they would rebuilt the Allied nations while granting them autonomy and freedom.

WWII was horrible but it's one of the few cases in history where the blame for its start and guilt for its most heinous crimes lay. The Axis were the "bad guys", there is no ambiguity about it.

Now this has nothing to do with race but rather with the culture that the Japanese Empire grew in and furthered; one of naked military aggression for the humiliation of WWI, racial superiority and a fanatical devotion to its rulers.

That required no "demonizing" that is the historical truth and Japan certainly has no monopoly on such crimes, there have been before and since and there will be more.

However today's Japan lives as testament that enemies can become allies and that no culture is beyond redemption.

No video game, no matter how the Japanese are portrayed are going to that reality or even its perception.

Now we have to remember that what we're really talking about is a video game, one with Zombies and as such shouldn't be taken so seriously. As with all WWII video games the Allies are the good guys, the Axis are the bad and the reasons are not one of bigotry or bias but because that is how it was.

In short this game is not going to make anyone hate the Japanese but what it might do is to spur players to learn more about the history and from that learning ensure that "never again" is a fact rather than a slogan.

If Iraq Turns a Corner...

Congrats Dinesh, you're on the list:

You do know that everything you've written here is either a lie or at best demonstrably wrong? That this is just a plea for everyone to ignore the disaster in Iraq for the sake of your Dear Leader?

But keep it up, I love that fundamentalists like you are continuing to marginalize themselves, sort of a self-neutering.

They've already shook hands:

I'd be amazed if there is a PlayStation 4.

Great game but from Red Alert to (I'm sorry but I have to disagree) StarCraft RTS games are hobbled with a paddle control. And LotR is more complex than SC.

It can be done but I don't think it can ever be done well.
