Metareview: Demon's Souls (PS3)

Oct 10th 2009 8:06AM (Joystiq)
This game is simply amazing.

Let me get this out of the way because I read all these reviews and was expecting something triple A across the board and it's not.

The look and feel of the menu system is archaic. This is old school Dungeons and Dragons here. Lots of symbols and numbers. You will need to refer to the manual quite a bit to see what symbol is what stat or what a certain buff / debuff symbol means.

The opening cinematic is not. It's more like concept art stills and a voice over. Still I thought it was good. Reminded me of someone telling me the story around a camp-fire for some reason.

The story makes a lot of sense actually (if you take the time to talk to all the NPCs - don't worry, there aren't that many).

So the presentation and production vaules are pretty low but everything else is amazing.

The online part is brilliant!!! I really hope this starts a trend with this type of play. I'm still trying to figure out how the servers work though. Are we all on one big server or are players randomly assigned a server? I saw a lot of other souls and messages but not nearly enough to be all of N. America playing,

The gameplay is so solid and so much fun. I'll take bland and boring menus for solid gameplay anyday.

I don't like that you can't pause the game at all but since enemies don't re-spawn it's usually easy to find a corner to hide in.

About the Difficulty - I didn't die once (well once but it was scripted) during my first 4 hours. I walked around with my shield up and paid attention to blood stains on the ground. If you take your time this game isn't as hard as some make it sound.

Heres a great excerpt from another article:

Campbell notes that Demon's Souls is an experience defined by its difficulty. "Demon's Souls is a game that takes itself seriously on a Dungeons and Dragons level," she writes. "A game where real-world physics meets a meticulously realized fantasy setting. The producer-developer of Demon's Souls is your DM, and he's a real stickler for the rules."

"As a result, Demon's Souls will be misread as a game that punishes the player," Campbell continues. "It does not. Instead, it asks you, sincerely: What would you actually do if you were thrust into a dark fantasy world? What is it really like to be a hero? Would you grab the three-foot sword because it looks awesome? Or would you equip yourself with a more conservative blade, and gingerly step towards your opponent with an eye on the exit?"

I beg to differ. Jumping out of a helicopter is a lot of fun. I have 30+ helo jumps and it's a lot of fun compared to jumping out of a plane. See when you jump out of a plane you continue forward momemtum for a bit. Much like how when you throw a beer bottle out of the window of a moving car it doesn't drop straight down. So when you do a helo jump, you actually fall straight down, much like BASE jumping.

FCC exposes, dissects DJ Hero turntable peripheral

I was thinking as I read the article just how bad this must piss off a Pub / Dev. I mean they have this in depth plan on releasing images and then bam, ugly shot.

It's like MySpace - really, how many pics of girls AREN'T at cute angles and with mood lighting?

Angles and lighting can make just about anything hot.

You know what's even more jacked up though? I actually changed my view as soon as I read "We'd say the FCC is kind of like the Hustler of gaming hardware snapshots" I dunno, maybe it reminded me of the first time I saw .......................................... in Hustler after seeing the pretty version in Playboy. While I was certainly scared, I appreciated the honesty and it became beautiful in it's own right.

I think this has been my best post ever BTW and no one will even read it due to me being late to the party.

DiRT 2 trailer shows everything (but racing)

Aug 20th 2009 6:37AM (Joystiq)
I disagree Mr. Hinkle. Everyone knows Dirt 2's gameplay is going to be solid and well just awesome. I personally loved this trailer. Forza has proved that having killer non-racing features can appeal to a much wider audience.

I love the immersion the trailer and prep areas give.

The only way that gameplay gets acceptable is if this is somehow an XBLA game. That just looked really bad.

I was all excited thinking I was about to see some artsy, new concept and blam! The fail hits.

Marvel not doing 'crappy' movie games anymore, says exec

The Wolverine game was (is) the biggest surprise of the year so far for me. It didn't do anything ground-breaking but I fully expected it fail like every other movie tie in. A buddy called and said I had to check the demo out. After I played I called a few more friends and so on and so on.

Around 8 of us beat the game over the next week. One of the best games of 2009 so far. I really enjoyed it and the cut-scenes were amazing.

The game had Portal, WoW and one other nerd-culture reference that slips my mind right now. Finding the cake by using the "portals" was pretty fulfilling (see what I did there?)

The combat only got old if you refused to play around with combos. Just like The Force Unleashed, you could beat it with a couple moves but it's a lot more fun if you experiment.

Review: Shadow Complex (XBLA)

Thanks guys. Before turning into a graphic designer, I was Army SOF for 7 years so I thought the same Dr. Steve. Either that or a reference to Delta Squad from Gears. In context it made sense but the way it was written didn't, so I knew I was missing something.
