Sep 17th 2011 12:25PM (Joystiq)I loved this game too, even though it had a horribly dramatic, over-the-top story. In my opinion it was like a lost PSone sequel that played/looked like a next-gen game but had the story of a bad/early PSone game. The kind that would be made as a direct sequel to a bad/early NES game with a cult following. I don't know why there was such a big deal over the ending, it's not really any more ridiculous than reviving hitler, REALLY, it's not.
The game was an absolute blast but people don't see what they were going for and just label it as bad. I loved GRIN and they seemed to get really creative with that one....
Obviously, financially or otherwise, Capcom shouldn't have let them do stuff like that, but I loved BC for what it was, its just a shame most people will never play it.
Come on DNA of your dead wife, linking of machine/muscle that need to work together, sure, its not necessary logic or anything by any means, but there's BEEN weirder shit in games.
Battlefield 3 co-op preview: Army of one
Aug 20th 2011 5:08PM (Joystiq)just cuz there isn't kitchy, hooky, co op gameplay, doesn't mean the experience isn't designed for co op. in fact i'd much rather play as 2 guys who just have to be badass in order to even get through the game, as well as play defensively and watch out for each other. i don't want to be in a helicopter or be disarming bombs, cuz those are parts that aren't actually as fun as just trying to outsmart enemies...
anyway, it sounded designed for co op to me...

May 27th 2011 7:31PM (Joystiq)so i wonder if all decisions were made trophywise if it does an all new 3rd, decision-based effect in the new game, which would be cool

May 14th 2011 9:24PM (Joystiq)it just pisses me off that it's excused so much. portal, half-life 2, and to an extent even killzone 2 tried to mix up the fps genre while many others don't do crap and games like crysis(or crysis 2) are just very tightly-built, well-made games which i respect as well. if ONE genre(fps) can be whored out so much without anyone caring why can't a new and popular genre like a layton game grow outward to other devs? sure the art style and presentation are similar but that is most likely so they can appeal to the current fans in japan of the professor layton series. konami could try a different direction like puzzle agent but that doesn't mean japanese consumers will know what to expect. it's called playing it safe and like %99 of american developers do it every day by ripping off quake, d and d, and other 15 year old game ideas.
it just scares me how narrow-minded gamers are these days. when we haven't seen a lick of gameplay, this game could easily have something crazy going for it. also, if anyone here has ever even played professor layton games, there isn't a ton of cutscenes, maybe like 5 or 6 at most, and they're pretty short aside from the beginning and the end. this game looks to be going with lower-budget animation so they can do a buttload of cutscenes and that's an interesting approach for sure. also, nobody seems to have commented on this, but this dude directed ZONE OF ENDERS and was producer on mga2, mgs digital graphic novel, and mgs:portable ops.
unlike many american devs the japanese often go aesthetically safe, in order to rope in the right customers while differentiating the game in other, creative ways.
Doctor Lautrec and the Developer Diary
May 13th 2011 11:09AM (Joystiq)essentially you will see a fps every once in a while with an original gameplay concept even tho pretty much all fps' are just rehashes of quake 3, goldeneye, or counter-strike....
so even tho this game will probably be most distinct in the gameplay department as the 'stiq points out, yeah, they are OBVIOUSLY going for a look which will appeal to people who like layton, it's not such an underhanded tactic... it's just a way to show people that it's a similar game. there aren't that many puzzle games out, but layton has had 5 releases, so it's not unexpected. once a video game genre has been created people can do what they want with it. originality for the sake of originality is a fantastic thing but it's a business too.
it's just really sad, really REEEALLY sad, people go apeshit over call of duty 5,000 but can't sleep at night over professor layton getting an homage from konami. you know, they did kind of give us castlevania and contra, 2 games which have been "homaged" a billion times over.
basically EVERY game is a ripoff except for noby noby boy....
sure it uses the same art style or whathaveyou but it's happened before, konami also invented the music genre, but after a genre is created anyone can run with it
