I think Randy Ptichford's argument was theoretical.
Everything is corruptible. Sure, the Valve guys right now are honorable and do right by their customers and developers, but they won't be around forever and some tool-bag will eventually find a way to screw the developers in someway.

It is kind of odd, though not unethical, to have other developers game sales directly fund Valve's competing games. However, without Steam a lot of these indie games wouldn't have sold 10 copies. Do you think Audiosurf would have made as much as it did if the dev was selling it through paypal on his ugly-ass website? Probably not.

I expect, based on Bioware's track record, for it to be a bug-ridden mess. Though, maybe that EA money will go to some QA (see Mass Effect for examples).
