I've had a theory for a little while now that the flash-sideways is actually what happened after the flash when they detonate the bomb, but before they appear back on the island in 2007. If you accept this theory then while it may've happened later in 2004 than where they are right now, it actually has already happened.

Think of it like how they went back to the 1970s, anyone of them could've had a flashback to 2004, because its part of their own personal timeline.
