Real men use Walkie-Talkies. It's what I used to do with my nearby friends while playing Starcraft back when we didn't have any highspeed options where we lived. It actually works fairly well.
Blowout isn't great, but it's not bad either. Use keyboard/mouse with left and right arrows for movement, up and down arrows for aiming, w and s for elevators and a and d for turn left and right, with the rest to your liking. Mouse and gamepad aiming are horribly borked.
I'd like to make a point: Doing my own research, I found out Atari lost the distro rights to Humongous and Infogrames in late 06. That's most likely why their games are gone, but not all of the Atari games.
I don't see how it's copying at all. If all Nintendo games required it and all it did was show how many tokens you have, then yeah, it'd be a rip off, but it's one game and you trade them in for in game bonuses. That kind of stuff has been around forever.
Reminder: Mario Kart Wii has voice chat, it's called XBL, PSN, Skype, etc.
