Yes but Boots....would you pay $500-600? I know of many who won't be able to or wouldn't outta principle.
Blu-Ray has many benefits - the best thing from the PS3. But it is also its Achilles Heel....for the pricing, Blu-Ray is just not ready now. If Sony charged $400, nobody would complain - I definitely wouldn't.
Price is v important to the masses. Gaming is not an exclusive right.
"Yes 600$ is alot of money. But its not that expesive if you compare.
399$ xbox premium + 100$ WiFi + 200$ HD-DVD + 50$ Live = 749$ Xbox 360. Thats what you get for the 600$ PS3.
Anyway, I hope you all have fun getting into bed with Microsoft. If you think Sony is acting all anti consumer just wait until Microsoft gets a stranglehold on the games industry."
Here is the thing...I, like most others, do not have a HDTV. I don't want a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player...for now. I just wanna play next gen games!
As soon as M$ starts ripping their userbase, I'm moving elsewhere to whoever might be best then. I did that when I moved from Nintendo to the Dreamcast and then to the PSX/PS2...and now to the 360.
I wanted the PS3 to do well - but they let us down big time. I just have to accept it and move on to the next big thing.
Fanboys aren't game fans - they are just corporate whores. If they really cared about games, they wouldn't allow being taken for a ride and just move on elsewhere. Sony haven't convinced me otherwise - but of course that can all change: but I doubt it when they are trying to push a $600 machine :(
Surely, priority should be on selling the HDTVs and then pushing the HD content?
The UK will be switching off analogue transmissions soon - people will need to upgrade their TVs and most likely than not, they'll go with HDTVs. Only then will we see a rise in demand for Blu-Ray/HDTVs. For the PS2, the step up from VHS to DVD was huge. But it won't be the same for DVD->HD as most people don't have a HDTV to see the benefits :(
Enough accusations of Joystiq's bias...they speak for the majority. $599/£425 is not the price of a console for the masses.
I loved the PSX and PS2 - and I for one wanted the PS3 to exceed. But the price, combined with their relatively poor showing in arguably the biggest event in the gaming calendar: E3, was enough to convince me that Sony don't give a crap about the gamers and just want to push the Blu-Ray format.
Gaming is not an exclusive right. We do not have to be in a position to sacrifice/save up extra more to have the right to own a games system.
We can argue till we are blue in the face, but Sony truly have mucked up the release of the PS3. The huge fanbase, the massive back catalogue - they only need to sell a more powerful machine and leave the Blu-Ray format until maybe the next incarnation when the userbase of HDTVs grew. Given the choice between a PS3 with a DVD drive and a 360, I would have gone with the PS3 anytime.
Joystiq are speaking the word of the gaming community. If people really cared about games, they would boycott the PS3 - to tell Sony that we won't be taken for a ride. The gaming community must prevail...
