Imagine the energy savings we would have if we had five second boot times (http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/02/1933206&from=rss). This is more about saving energy and being greener about our computing than anything else.

Nobody likes staring at a boot screen while waiting to do their work and many ppl use that as an excuse to leave their computers on 24/7. Would you leave your TV on 24/7 while you're at work just b/c it took 2 minutes between hitting the 'on' button and seeing a picture?

since the last expansion, FFXI does now have many different types of instanced combat zones (assault, salvage, einjar) which varies from parties of 6, 18 to 36 all dropping different types of 'end-game' gear.

the focus as someone has already said is on community and teamwork. But even that has changed a bit since the updates post-WoW release. The developers do try and keep up with the current mmo fads, implementing more side games (chocobo raising, the pit, ballista, etc). They've even made improvments in many of the jobs which make them more solo-able for ppl that like that sort of thing. ;P
