Sony, TiVo, NCTA and others chime in on CableCARD's replacement

Jul 15th 2010 9:16PM (Engadget)
The industry should work on uniform standards for hardware CEs and providers to follow to ensure the best interoperability between products. It'd allow me to take my DVR from service to service to service as long as my DVR had the features I wanted without fear of losing recordings on it or having to buy/rent some other piece of equipment. It is not sufficient to simply innovate; there needs to be compatible standards that everyone can follow. It's how DVD became so big, it's why downloads is such a mess today.

What Are the Summer Outfits You Hate Seeing Guys Wear?

"Shorts that fall above the knee

Only a grandpa can get away with that."

No, I think you meant below the knee. There's no way that capri pants are acceptable for men.

Inexplicable rise in iPhone dev's App Store sales connected to iTunes account hacks? (update)

Yeah, I want an end to physical media and download/streaming everything.

What happened to the white iPhone 4?

Jun 23rd 2010 10:14AM (Engadget)
Weren't the white ones in short supply when the GS was released? Only reason I don't have (an order for) an iphone 4 is I want the white model. I thought about getting the white GS and wished I had.

LG's $400 BX580 network 3D Blu-ray player ships in a month or two

On AVS Forums, the 570/590 series of players are plagued with problems. If it worked as expected, these players are superior to the ps3 as they offer NTFS and MKV support on top of DLNA functionality and built in netflix & other services.

Cable VOD is DOA and will go nowhere as long as it continues to simply be a "PPV" system instead of being "baked" into my cable fees. And it doesn't work with my tivo HD anyway so it's moot.

PPV does as well as it does because of $50 sporting events.

Is 1080p enough resolution for everything?

May 1st 2010 12:01AM (Engadget HD)
Thats because for most people, going to higher resolutions squeezes the icons ever smaller and smaller and makes the text more so. At work we've used 1600x1200 LCDs for about 5 years, and CRTs 5 before that, and a lot of the 40+ crowd goes with the lower resolutions (1280x1024 or lower) because the icons and text is just too hard to read at 1600x1200.

At home I bought a 1080p monitor to replace my dying 1280x1024 LCD and it's great, but the text _is_ small and I'm getting older enough that higher resolution monitors won't be of much use for me.

Halo 2 still kinda alive, thanks to some fans

I suspect it's because all the server does is track stats (?) and set up the match making at the start. Once in the system everything is peer to peer I spose. Thats the only way this makes any kind of sense to me.

Apple refreshes MacBook Pro family with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors... at long last!

Apr 13th 2010 6:02PM (Engadget)
Gonna have to hit the apple store and look at the 13" model. I've been wanting one and waited for the refresh before buying. The upgrades seem welcome but I'm still a little gunshy about paying the "apple tax".
