Penny Arcade responds to our "hideous editorial," misses the point [update 1]

Sep 15th 2006 12:08PM (Joystiq)
@100: If that is what he was going for, he sure didn't even come close to saying that. It doesn't take an MBA to come up with "If Nintendo sold for cheaper, they could OMG WTF PWN the competition." I came up with it, and I'm just a blood sucking lawyer.

As for the "pot-kettle," touche. Then again, that is his writing style, and some people do love it, which is a bit different than throwing in latin terms to spruce up economic arguments. That is the first thing you learn NOT to do in legal writing: throwing in latin not only makes you confusing, as an added bonus people will think you're a dumb ass.

Then again, MBAers are usually out drinking and snorting coke while calling it "networking," so maybe they teach you that in business school.

Rational gamers choose subsidized hardware, all else equal [update 2]

Did you take an econ class online or something?

There are so many flaws with this that it is not even funny (and no, I'm not talking about the "all else being equal" part).

Rational consumers seek to maximize gains from trade. However, buying the most subsisidized console does not necessarily maximize gains from trade. If, however, we could part out consoles and remove features we did not want, this argument could have merit. A PS3 would be much more attractive to me if they took out the Bluray, HDMI, and wifi, and droppped the price $250. Therefore, when I buy a PS3 and put what I subjectively value the system at, I am overpaying $250, and not maximizing my gains from trade.

If you meant by "all things being equal" that the consoles were equal as well (I assumed software was for above), then all you said was if A was at least as good as itself, would you rather buy A at $100, $300, or $600. And that is just plain retarded.

With so many uses for three-sixty,
The feature set seems to confuse me,
With Media Center Extender,
Xbox is infinetely better,
I watch internet porn on my TV.

With the PS3 launch getting near,
The console war picture gets clear,
They'll lose market share,
Kaz says they don't care,
While the stockholders tremble in fear.

There once was a Joystiq host,
That had information to boast,
We stayed up late,
To hear something great,
All we got was an older news post.

Nintendo targets the casual gamer,
The hardcore scream its "teh lamezer,"
They say it won't sell,
Cause the graphics are hell,
But Christmas grandmas just buy the cheaper.

There once was a marketing genius,
Who named a console after his penis,
He plays with his Wii,
And says quietly,
"God, I hope no one has seen us."

A-A-B-B-A people!

Sony's been doing acrobatics,
To determine its launch geographics,
For six-hundred bones,
That thing better pwn,
And of course those Toy Story graphics.

Long ago in feudal Japan-age,
Giant crabs infested the land-age,
For posterity's sake,
In a game they would make,
"ATTACK ITS WEAK POINT FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE!"

They are called "Entitlements" because after buying the console and a game you will be on welfare.
