Rumor: Ruffian contracted by major publisher for multiplatform game

Nov 29th 2011 6:01PM (Joystiq)
Crackdown 2 was that bad ... it wasn't even as well made as the first game, which is why it deserves all the criticism it received. I can think of one positive ... they added co-op.

But here are the negatives - they used the exact same map and assets as the first game, but with less detail and made them "worn and destroyed" to make people feel like they were playing a new game. They removed many of the extras in Crackdown ... like the boss fights, which were some of the most fun parts of the first game.

Basically, Ruffian nearly ensured that Crackdown will not get a third game. It deserves a third game but Crackdown was tarnished by Ruffian's poor and rushed job on the 2nd game.

'No plans' for Xbox 360 version of Champions Online, Cryptic says

Mar 24th 2010 5:41PM (Joystiq)
This is hardly MS' fault ... it's Cryptics. If Champions had actually lived up to the hype on PC then there is no doubt a console version would be coming down the line, as Cryptic had claimed prior to the release of Champions on PC.

As it stands, Champions is in a fledgling state right now, barely keeping numbers high enough to call it a successful MMO. The reason Cryptic is now "only focusing on the PC" version is because if they don't, the PC version will die and then a console version will be absolutely worthless because who in their right mind would invest in a console MMO (totally unproven genre outside of FF) that just died on PC where MMOs are a dime a dozen.

If you want to criticize someone, point the blame at Cryptic for releasing a poorly developed product that had a lot of potential but lost its way rather than taking the cliche approach of yet again blaming this on Microsoft.

Metareview: Left 4 Dead 2

Nov 20th 2009 3:29PM (Joystiq)
The game is awesome ... the difficulty is refreshing, the first one was too easy. I know this because I normally suck at most fps games and I was doing just fine on the advanced and expert modes.

Now it's actually a struggle, it feels life or death, not everyone makes it each and every time ... and I love it. Sacrifices are made ... people are left for dead. Between the swarms of special infected and the added atmosphere effects (seriously, the rain and smoke effects are awesome and make the game a whole new level of crazy), this is an awesome experience that is challenging and rewarding.

But here's the secret ... play of PC ... because it's not fun on 360. I played the first on both and PC is where this game is meant to be played ... and it's fun as hell ... a difficult as hell too, but oh so worth it.

Wait, what? Watchmen game-plus-movie hybrid Blu-ray comes on two discs

Jul 22nd 2009 2:32AM (Joystiq)
Uh actually Jem this does include a hybrid disc ... the included 'game' disc is a hybrid disc that includes both parts of the game, as well as all the extras included on the 2nd disc with the standard bluray release.

In my opinion, this is actually a sweet deal even if the game isn't AAA. I bought it just to support the concept of packaging games and movies together. The fact that it includes everything the standard Bluray does, outside of the Digital Copy, is great in my opinion and the game is an added bonus which I felt was worth the $20 over the standard Bluray.

One point I'm unclear on is whether the Ultimate Watchmen release later this year will include the game. From everything I've read, it doesn't appear the game will be included ... if that's the case, then this package is an even better value considering I would never buy the game without the movie.

Rumor: Cryptic making Neverwinter Nights MMO for Atari

Jun 10th 2009 5:49AM (Joystiq)
How exactly can Cryptic be working on 3 MMOs at the same time? I understand that they're spaced out with releases over the next 3 years, but good franchise MMOs take an incredible amount of work to maintain and update. You don't see Blizzard launching 3 MMOs over the course of 3 years, they put their development time into improving the current MMO and maybe prepping a secret secondary MMO for sometime later. Cryptic is a far smaller studio than Blizzard or some of the current MMO developers from what I've read. Does that strike anyone else as somewhat odd that they would be spearheading 3 MMOs in 3 years?
