One million Americans have Just Danced

Apr 17th 2010 10:12PM (Joystiq)
Actually, he is right. Ubisoft has already said this before about their games. They make the more casual titles that sell tons to a wider audience, and these sales give them the funds to produce more games for the older gaming audience (ie: those that have been playing games for years).

Walkthrough: Netflix instant streaming on Wii

Apr 12th 2010 8:55PM (Joystiq)
The reason I've heard that this isn't a Wii Channel yet is because of the Microsoft-Netflix exclusivity deal. Once that runs out, I fully expect a downloadable channel for Wii and whatever accounts for the same thing on the PS3. I imagine the discs are just a temporary measure until they have the access to make it downloadable. My discs come in for both the Wii and PS3 tomorrow (I have the Wii, stepson the PS3), and I can't wait to try this out. I recently just signed up for Netflix because of the Wii discs coming out. Its going to be great to have a movie player on the TV, since I am such a huge movie fan. And the ability to update the que on the Wii OR my laptop, I think is a great idea.

NPD: Online gaming up 10 percent in US

@frikazoyd:

There is something here that really isn't all that true, though. There aren't that many "Wii games require friend codes". For most (not sure about all, but I would believe it is close) Wii games that have an online mode, friend codes are NOT a requirement to play. Most heavy online Wii games (such as the CoD's, etc.) have a perfectly fine random matchmaking system (very similar to what is on the 360 and PS3). Friend codes are not required to play in random partner games. Also, with the CoD games put out by EA, the games are played on the EA Nation servers, NOT Nintendo's. With these games, you have a username/gamertag/whateryouwanttocall it that you log in with and use. Friends are added to your "friend list" using only their login names, no friend codes. The only time FC's really become a necessity are in games that rely on Nintendo's online servers. For another example, the upcoming Monster Hunter Tri (which is absolutely pre-ordered already...yay!), there are no friend codes needed for online play OR Wii-speak support with strangers. Why? Because the game runs on Capcom's servers, so Capcom can set the standards they choose to use. I do not understand why so many Wii users/board posters are still pointing to FC's as being such a huge thing these days. There are companies that have worked around them, and there will be more that do, I am sure.

Although, I would agree with you that the "non-gamers" out there who are purchasing the Wii probably exchange FC's more than others, what's the harm in that? It just means more people online and using their Wii's, which I say is a good thing. :)

NPD: Online gaming up 10 percent in US

I don't know. From reading Wii boards and such, it sounds like CoD:WaW and CoD:MWR both have a solid online following. I have Reflex, but haven't had a chance to play it yet as I had to send my Wii in for repairs. But I did play WaW online, and it was a truly solid and fun experience. The Conduit also has a solid online component, and can be a blast to play. Mario Kart, as already mentioned, clearly has a strong multiplayer side as well. Plus, there are others. Some WiiWare games are online compatible, SSBB has online (even if its seems broken to many players, it can and is still played online by others), Animal Crossing is online capable, and the new Endless Ocean: Blue World is too. And those are just some of the games I have (apart from Animal Crossing). So, I would say that the Wii has a stronger online following than many of the "hardcore" gamers believe.

NHL 2K11 skips Xbox 360 and PS3, only coming to Wii [update]

Mar 4th 2010 9:04AM (Joystiq)
Actually, this isn't a bad idea, from what I remember of NHL2K10 reviews. The game consistently (if I remember right) scored better on the Wii than the other PS3/360. They incorporated a lot things in the Wii version: WM+ support, decent-to-good controls utilizing mostly smart motion support, a solid online effort, and multiple modes of play some of which weren't available on the HD systems. If they (2K) are wanting to head in the direction of controls which pull you more into the game, then focusing on the Wii effort for a year to really nail them down...then attempting to port those kind of control schemes to the 360 (Natal) and PS3 (wonder wand or whatever the hell its going to be called) makes sense. It would possibly give 2K a jump over EA on motion controls for 2012 versions of the games, as they would already have 3 years of solid work on Wii motion control efforts. Last years Wii game (NHL2K10) was a pretty good game. They could improve on that this year, and move it to the other systems again in the next year.

"BrokenTriforce @ Mar 4th 2010 3:44AM

According to the post more people are cheating and trashtalking than last year."

Actually, according to the post, the NUMBER of people "cheating and trashtalking" is DOWN by 2% over last year...just the ones that are left are playing longer (8 hours a week this year compared to 7.3 hours last year). So, the original post was correct...some people have taken a break from playing online.

Disney wants to take Epic Mickey to 'Nintendo levels' on the Wii

Feb 27th 2010 1:22PM (Joystiq)
This. I read the article, and this is really what Disney was talking about. He was saying that the REASON that 3rd party software can fail on the Wii is because they aren't given the proper resources or time to develop said titles. Instead, publishers push to dump a Wii game out as quickly and cheaply as they can, to try to get it out to the numbers of Wii consoles sold. What Disney was saying, was that they are giving Warren and crew all the development time and resources they need to properly and fully develop this game for maximum potential on the Wii hardware (which is what Nintendo does with its first party titles). I was VERY impressed to hear him talking that way, and hope him the best of luck with Epic Mickey and the other titles they are developing (like with the Marvel licenses). It was encouraging to hear a company with deep pockets like Disney speaking in such a way about game development, not just for Nintendo systems, but for ALL game systems out there that they are going to produce games for.

Monster Hunter Tri demo disc will be available to all

Feb 25th 2010 6:55PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Hooray! Just shipped my Wii off for repair, so it should be back and in perfect working condition just in time to run out and get a copy of this demo disc. Works for me! Never tried any of the other versions of MH released here in NA, so I can't wait to get my hands on a demo disc and try it out.

Dunaway: Wii successor isn't coming 'anytime soon'

Feb 25th 2010 6:54PM (Joystiq)
lol...yeah, I did the exact same thing. All I could think was "WTF is that woman DOING?!?!" lol Then I saw what she was really doing and felt really really stupid. :-P

Hands-on: Disney Guilty Party

Feb 25th 2010 6:47PM (Joystiq)
I agree completely. I have twin 7yo girls (they have become my little girl gamers, thanks to their dad, and play more than me!) and I think they would love something like this. And so would I, as Clue is one of my all-time favorite board games and Z&W is one of the best games on the Wii, IMO.
