Vista's Aero interface blamed for truncated battery life

May 4th 2007 6:27PM (Engadget)
I find this hard to believe. As another poster noted, GPUs are much more efficient than CPUs for graphics operation, so putting GUI operations on the GPU should result in increased speed and efficiency. I don't run Vista on my laptop, but Aero certainly does seem faster on my desktop. I think this is mostly FUD. If Vista is causing reduced battery life compared to XP, I'd blame Superfetch.

And Todd, Apple didn't invent everything under the fucking sun. Aero is pretty; get over it.

Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for PC, it works

Why would you want to use a game controller on a Mac? =P

NIMF report card lauds retailers, chastises parents

Nov 30th 2006 2:10PM (Joystiq)
NiMF is full of shit and this study is extremely dubious. For example:

# Screen time and school performance. We found the amount of time kids spend playing video games is correlated with poorer grades in school and attention problems.
# Violent video games and aggression. Scientific research shows that violent video game play increases aggression in young players in the short term. Additional studies show these effects last.

I'd like to see some figures to back up those claims, and I'd like to know exactly what kind of methodology they used. I will admit that I haven't read the whole article (don't have time) so it's possible that they do go into detail on these things, but I wasn't able to find any such citations as I skimmed.

Anyone can claim that "studies show xyz," but without figures to back it up, those claims should be taken with a very, very large grain of salt.

Joystiq Video: The Wii network is live!

Nov 19th 2006 2:34AM (Joystiq)
Wow, I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but that process looks incredibly slow and boring. The Wii interface is also very bland and ugly. Of course, those things don't matter if the games can deliver, but that video just makes me more skeptical of how Nintendo is handling online.

Touchscreen Starcraft demonstrates how RTS games were meant to be played

When I said FPS in my last comment, I meant RTS.

Touchscreen Starcraft demonstrates how RTS games were meant to be played

Sep 9th 2006 11:04PM (Joystiq)
Touchscreen or no, PC RTS games would haved to be dumbed down a lot to be playable on the DS simply because the DS's touchscreens are only 256 x 192 pixels each. There's no way you can communicate the amount of information needed for a PC FPS on a screen with such a low resolution.

For anyone wondering about the name of #15, "Loup-Garou" is French for werewolf.

Behind-the-scenes with Ctrl+Alt+Del's Tim Buckley [update 1]

Hm, that trailer at the start was actually quite funny, which is odd considering I find the CAD webcomic extremely dry, repetitive and unoriginal. The voice fits Ethan well. I'm still not paying for it, though.

Boobs, vibrators, and Hitler make "strangest" list

May 31st 2006 10:54PM (Joystiq)
To those who think it's NSFW: as others have said, maybe you shouldn't be reading a gaming site at work. Unless you work in the industry, I highly doubt your company condones the use of their computers to be reading about videogames anyway, so if you're worried about NSFW pictures on this site, go ahead and call the WAAAAAHHMBULANCE.

To those who say it's inappropriate for children: This is the internet, they'll see far worse. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfect "net nanny" program. If you're concerned about it, perhaps your child should not be using the internet.
