That's right, it was GH4 that finally broke out of meh cover-song jail. Correction duly noted.

Well, it makes sense: GH3 was probably the most highly-anticipated entry in the series, since it was the first one to debut outside of the PS2, with all of the original songs (no covers), and it still had the overwhelming goodwill of the first two games behind it. Then we got the game home and discovered that it was more like the creepy re-animated corpse of GH 1 and 2, with horrible-looking characters and poorly-charted versions of the songs.

It's too bad Activision got greedy and kicked the heart and soul (Harmonix) out of the game — I really wanted to love GH3+4, but they became such a pain in the ass to actually play, what with Neversoft's penchant for squibbly-doo nonsense over realistic, playable charting.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Dock Ellis LSD no-hitter challenge, complete with psychedelic freak-out graphics.
