IGN's Casamassina responds to conflict of interest claims

Dec 20th 2007 4:53AM (Joystiq)
VGMWatch.com has been able to confirm that VGMWatch editor David Gornoski is “good buddies” with Kyle Orland, editor of the news blog, Joystiq.com, which purports to serve as an unbiased news blog. Sources connected with both VGMWatch and Joystiq were able to validate this information. While VGMWatch has no interest in personal affairs, undisclosed conflicts of interest plaguing the game industry’s integrity cannot be ignored. To that end, there are several journalistic red flags surrounding the facts of this case.

Unfortunately, we have yet to discover any public acknowledgment from either ourselves or Joystiq.com informing readers of this conflict of interest. Furthermore, VGMWatch has continued to allow this editor to manage video game “controversies.”. Likewise, the Joystiq editor in question is responsible for promoting VGMWatch stories. Clearly, dozens of VGMWatch’s readers’ trust has been violated by this irresponsible abandonment of principle.

"Like Blue Dragon,The demo was awesome but what they don't tell you is that the music form the Demo loops in the final product over and over and over again until you want to cut your ears."

Exactly. I actually played the demo and loved the music...until as you said, you realize that's pretty much the only music :P

"Ok so the previews saying it was really easy to pick up and play?,What?,were they lying all this time or they got their hands on playing a different version?."

As one who previews games, it's neither. You'd be surprised how well some gameplay facets can come across in a short, contrived demo (where the developer has hand-chosen exactly what you see) when compared to actually investing hours into the full-length adventure.

What came across as a "minor concern" in the demo can quickly balloon into a major problem. However, it's not fair to the developers (or the readers) to blow what might be a "minor concern" out of proportion until you know for sure that it actually breaks the game, hence the more optimistic preview vs reviews.

Also, Joystiq, your comparison of IGN's "preview" and "review" are ridiculous. One was written by the US division, the other by the UK. They are two totally separate teams have share nothing but name in common. Furthermore, as stated above, the controls may very well have appeared to be competent in the demo's case (due to level design or whatnot) whereas its problems were perhaps exasperated in the final product.

"I wouldn't trust IGN alone yet they give 9.5 and 10 like candy so thats a bad signal."

Um, what? IGN has given less than 5 perfect 10s in its entire existence. Perhaps you're thinking of 1UP, which gives a blow job to the few companies still supporting them (Mircrosoft) for not breaking embargoes.
