Engadget's 6th birthday giveaway: 'Gadget of the Year' edition

I don't really need/want one, but I do want the money that I will inevitably get when I sell it on ebay :D

Dell Mini 5 will run 'something newer' than Android 1.6 at launch

Feb 15th 2010 4:09PM (Engadget)
@bluefisch200 It's a bit of each. As Chris Zeigler described in one of the podcasts it's sort of at the intersection point of two or three usefulness curves for MID/tablets, and smartphones. It's on the very large size for a phone, but somewhat small for a tablet. It's probably to biggest screen size you could implement and still be able to hold it comfortably in one hand.

@TareG Any reason why?

I have pretty huge hands and large pockets so this device has definitely caught my attention. I'm pretty much choosing this or the HTC supersonic depending on what the WiMAX coverage in my areas of travel are like. I plan on using either with a bluetooth stereo headset, so the somewhat odd appearance of such large devices being held to one's head doesn't concern me.

2010 is shaping up to be incredibly exciting :)

Firefox 4 Windows mockup provides 5 UI hints of things to come

@DKyleF

Yeah, I'm aware of fullscreen mode, but I find it less flexible than having the browser open in a window. Sometimes I have to have the browser open in a small window due to other work and I just want to maximize that space that's available.

The beauty of Firefox is in the ability for a user to heavily customize it's appearance. Chrome allows for "themes," but Firefox can be configured to look how you want. Yes, the default UI takes up too much space, but look at the UI when you have a couple extensions.

You'll notice that most of what appears by default is hidden. That's how I like to browse, but Google Chrome isn't flexible enough to let me have it my way.

HTC's 2010 roadmap goes on display?

Dec 9th 2009 11:18PM (Engadget)
I'm just going to repeat what many comments have stated. I really just want HTC to make a new landscape QWERTY Android phone with Sense.

They do have some interesting form factors here. The Tide looks cute and the Salsa at least has a QWERTY keyboard of some kind. What I was hoping for was a new phone with a 5 row, offset keyboard like the Dream. The Terra comes close, but for some reason HTC keeps hogging the landscape keyboards for WinMo.

I feel like HTC makes the best keyboards out there. It's just a shame they've only implemented it on a single android device. I tried the Droid, but it made me long for the Dream's keyboard ;_;

I'm waiting for Motorola to design a decent keyboard.

I'm liking it so far.
