Fair enough - it did go to 9. But his genius stopped at 7. 8 (Pagan) was a rushed mismash, and 9 was hijacked and spit out as an abomination to the EA overlords he sold himself to.
Mr. Garriott is a trip to say the least - and I'm a big fan. From Ultima 1 to 8 he defined and dominated as an industry pioneer (Ultima Online Beta tester here too - the first MMORPG, way before its time alas).
He is as eccentric as he is ingenious. I won't try to contradict the tales already shared by those here - those stories are probably true. All I know is I met the man in '87 and went to his house (Brittannia Manor in Austin) several times over the years and have been equally impressed as bemused by his quirks.
I hope he's not done in continuing to make his mark on the gaming world. Lord knows he redefined things in his heyday, buy he chose to fade as time went by. Here's to hoping he throws his hat back in the ring once more in the midst of his perpetual 'extracurricular' activities. If he doesn't - oh well. He already has made history for what he's done, even if the newer generation doesn't realize what a major player in the game he was back in the day. And for that, I don't judge. He's done a great job of writing himself into irrelevance as he focuses more on space travel, and being the owner of space junk . . .
I've been using PDAnet for years on my Treos. Small one-time fee and I've been surfing for ages. I'm sure there's a free 'hack' to do this without the need to buy PDAnet, but it was cheap and easy enough to just pay for it and go (I'm lazy). No doubt they will develop a version for the Pre (I pray). Thus one avoids whatever extra charges Sprint gives for using the phone as modem (they do charge extra for that don't they? I don't know - like I said, I've been using PDAnet)

Lord British! Those who remember miss thee.
Whatever though.
