NTT DoCoMo to get HTC Magic as HT-03A

May 8th 2009 8:09AM (Engadget Mobile)
Can't say that I like the new button layout so much. The menu button is used pretty heavily, even on Cupcake. Same for the back button - although I do like that they're raised a little.

UK woman is most definitely, absolutely the #1 Halo Wars fan -- 100 percent confirmed!

Three pages and not a single Pillar of Autumn crack?

Paid apps appear in Android Market

Feb 20th 2009 1:50PM (Engadget Mobile)
I just started seeing the paid apps... odd, my 2G has been flaky all morning so I did reboot for that, but the network was still unavailable and the apps were still all free.

Once the network came back up 15 minutes ago I looked in the store and I see prices. I didn't get any update prompts it just happened.

I'm on RC33

1.99 for gBurp... uh, whoohoo?

T-Mobile G1 moves beyond 3G markets, available everywhere tomorrow

I've had one for almost a month now on an EDGE network...?

Amazon: 12+1 months of Live for $29.97!

Jan 18th 2009 4:48PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Just picked mine up... thanks for the heads up! I've seen this deal at Amazon one before but I wasn't on gold then.
Why would MS stop charging if people are still willing to pay? It's pretty cheap and it seems like they would just expand silver to allow some gaming (arcade titles)... I think they started this already, right?

How does MS number thy Windows? Let Mike Nash count the ways.

I still blame the OEMs for a lot of the first-round Vista problems personally. They tried stuffing their slightly-tested XP utilities into Vista to make sure that you saw their brand name in as many places as possible. Clean installs of Vista have not given me nearly as much trouble. I remember the OEMs screaming when Vista was put off for the holiday season (2006?) because they wanted it ASAP to boost their new machine sales.

If they would just make some branded wallpaper, verify the hardware, and make their applications optional downloads instead of prepackaged, I think that would help the problem.

Hands-on with Sprint's Touch Pro

Congratulations! A post on a WinMo phone without a single lament on how much better it would be with Android! This is my next phone unless the HD does something revolutionary with the virtual keyboard.

Mojave Experiment goes live, doesn't fail to annoy

OEM XP installations stink just as bad as OEM Vista installations, I think it's just as much the hardware vendors' fault as anyone. Macs don't have this issue, obviously.. On the flip side, without all the included bloatware, PCs would not be at the low price points that make them accessible to more people.

I just bought a new Dell laptop with Vista Premium and it had all sorts of basic problems... video flickering, wifi dropouts, etc. I immediately reinstall just Vista without all the "features" software and it's been an excellent machine ever since. I would do the exact same thing with a new XP machine.

Detractors, if you actually watch the main presentation, every single "user" admits they don't actually use Vista and are basing their rating on opinion and hearsay.

Engadget calls this a low-handed experiment, but in reality it's just good advertising. Look at all the free press Microsoft is getting from the campaign already. I'm sure your thank-you card is in the mail... keep up the good work! :-)

I actually think Microsoft is doing the right thing here because I do believe they are fighting a lot of myths surrounding Vista. I'm not saying there aren't real problems. This is a marketing tool, and if it gets even a handful of users to switch from pessimistic to open-minded, then it's a successful one.

Microsoft on track to release Windows 7 multi-touch SDK in October

May 29th 2008 2:10PM (Engadget)
I think it's interesting that so many people are discounting this as useless.

I look at it very much like Gestures... very popular add-on for Firefox (I think Safari and IE have versions as well). There's a huge opportunity to simplify computing and reduce repetitive stress by eliminating clicks and replaceing them with simple curves and other motions.

Being able to rest your hand on a desk surface and control the action with a few simple swipes? It's something that I personally am looking forward to.
