Official version of second Halo short released

Aug 28th 2007 5:36AM (Joystiq)
As somebody who studied films at college, and as simply a Halo fan, these shorts make me want to vomit.

It seems like the whole short was made on $100. The costumes look terrible and seem to have no weight to them. The actual space in which the short takes place looks unrealistic even for an ingame level. It just looks like they rented out the bottom of a quarry and put up some set dividers.

I just have a problem with investing in the world created.

I dont think that he is a particulary stunning director. Everything I have seen has been on a small scale. With just 1 or 2 events to focus on. This may say more about the budget he has been given than the director, but maybe that says something about the director regarding the budget he has been given ;)

And the whole shakey cam thing works when there is alot going on around you, ie, Saving Private Ryan, Gears (roadie run), because it looks like you are fighting for your life through the chaos. But when nothing is going on, and its just a warthog driving through a fake concrete wall, and some dude running up to some other dude with 1 or 2 bullets hitting the wall, it just looks silly.

Glad the Halo film was canceled tbh. Michael Mann or James Cameron would be better.

PAX 07: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune hands-on

Aug 28th 2007 5:20AM (Joystiq)
Why do people think "games on Blu Ray will be longer". I think every single game up to this point has proved that this is not the case.

It has nothing to do with the tech of a disc. Compression is so good these days that DVD is managing to hold on there.

The main reason, however, is that it takes devs 2 or 3 years as it is to create these 10 to 12 hour games. Even 6 or 7 hour games (Gears, H Sword, Im looking at you) take 2 or 3 years.

If you really want games to be 20, 30 or even 40 hours long, you will have to wait much much longer. So much so that the dev can expect to only put out 1 game per generation.

On top of this you will need a script writer that not only can create a good story, but keep it fresh in the 40th hour.

If you want 20, 30 or 40 hours gameplay. Go play WoW for 2 days straight.

Joystiq impressions: Ratchet & Clank Future (PS3)

Jul 16th 2007 7:04AM (Joystiq)
Its alright saying "If it aint broke dont fix it". But look at all the games that had its legions of fans but have been improved by new gameplay additions. Especially this generation.

Rainbow Six Vegas basically saved the series while pleasing fans of the first ones (Ive played since RS1 on ps1/PC)

DiRT has sold really well. Although the main rally system remains on the whole unchanged, all the other racing stuff is a nice way to break up the gameplay.

Oblivions fast travel and combat system. Hardcore fans say what you want, it made the game instantly enjoyable.

The Hitman games, the Splinter Cell games. Even Metal Gear 3. Every one of them has put in new ways to kill, which means different ways to play the game.

Unreal Tournament with vehicles, although not my favorite addition of the series, it certainly gave it a different challenge.

So dont type "If it aint broke, dont fix it" as if you are happy with the same old stuff for $60. Chances are, you are just a dissapointed fan with your hands over your ears.

Could Lost Planet come to PS3?

Works both ways. If this goes to PS3. DMC could go to 360.

"Violent Pac-Man" researcher responds

Is she a videogamer?

Or somebody who heard there was empolyment in playing on peoples fears? And decided that chomping a ghost was violent? Hell, you've got to flesh out your studies somehow, right?

Start with cartoons and childrens action figures and work your way up lady.

Colin McRae less popular than dirt

Jul 20th 2006 8:14PM (Joystiq)
Like most things from Europe when they go to the US they have to be dumbed down.

For example. The first Harry Potter book was called (In Europe) HP and the Philosophers stone. However worried that the folks in the US might not be able to say Philosopher or even know what it means. The title was changed to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Same with this. Those of you from the US, it is not because they dont think you will know who Colin McRae is. Its just codemasters are worried that McRae will be too complex for you. So they switched round the words so in big capital letters it says DIRT.

Can you manage that?

How will British standby laws affect consoles? [update 1]

Jul 20th 2006 3:45PM (Joystiq)
Im sorry. The 360 goes on standby? How do I put my 360 on standby? Its either on or its off UNLESS the recharge kit is recharging my controller. But surley then its actually doing something? And as soon as my controller is charged it turns off..

Totally baffled by your 360 comment about it having to be recalled. Can you please clarify what you meant. Cus I am not aware that the 360 is on standby.

Can some1 else please confirm/deny the 360 has a standby function?
