Try The GIMP -- it may be a bit confusing at first (it's on a par with Photoshop in terms of features, but the UI is sadly typical of most open source software, i.e. a bit of a mess) but it'll do exactly what you're after without breaking a sweat.
@Chris: Is there an equivalent in os x to "map a network drive" in windows? I know how to mount shares over my network but getting them to appear automatically at login is what i need.
Not quite a perfect solution, and there's probably a shell-scripty way of doing it, but it works: Connect to the network drive as normal, then drag a folder from the networked drive to the shortcuts part of the Finder sidebar. Next time you log in, clicking on that folder will remount the drive.
