NY Seeks to Jail HIV Infector Indefinitely

May 3rd 2010 11:39PM (BV Black Spin)
What he did was absolutely disgusting, but today we live in a society where we blame others for everything. Where was the protection these women should have made sure was used? Is it not their part, since anyone having unsafe sex could get HIV, to protect themselves? I believe it goes both ways in these HIV infection cases. They prosecute the one who did the infecting, but what about the fault of the receiver who got infected to make sure it didn't happen? It's called "condoms or sorry not tonight."

Dish adds EPIX HD and eight more to crack 200 HD channels, depending on how you count to 200

Apr 21st 2010 3:22PM (Engadget HD)
This is awesome, G4, Epix and TCM, all in the same update, and last time it was reteroplex, indeplex, BBC America, ect...I have been a customer of Dish for 5 years and will stay for a long time to come. I don't even see most of those on Direct which we have had on Dish for months(the previous update). Plus Dish has had my HD locals for 9 months now, DirecTV doesn't offer them. I keep getting letters to switch to DirecTV but NO WAY! Dish has always come through.

I am not anti-DirecTV, but I am saying I am extremely happy with Dish and won't change because Dish gets the channels long in advance.

Blu-ray Discs expand to 128GB under new BDXL spec

Apr 4th 2010 6:14AM (Engadget)
@3dpenguin

Not everyone wants to take a thousand movies everywhere they go. Some of us have home theaters and are very happy with a Blu-ray disc sitting on our shelves that will not erase or become defective like all hard drives will eventually do. I had 100 or so movies on a Dish Network external drive that failed, and that was it. They don't allow for a backup. Most download services now in business will not let you transfer movies more than once. If your drive fails, you have to purchase the movie again (at least all of the sites I have seen deal that way). 24-hour rental periods, on-demand, so where are you going to get these thousand movies to keep transferring to different storage devices and what happens when your drive with the thousand movies fails?

For those who watch movies on the go, I am completely for movies on drives, but I guess I am happy with my Blu-rays at home in my home theater 150" screen, with the extras and the lossless audio on my 7.1 channel sound system, the only place I watch movies.

This is definitly a buy for me, a timeless classic with a great musical soundtrack! Where's Mary Poppins?

Universal's BD-59 Blu-ray / DVD flip discs to debut on Bourne trilogy releases

Oh geeeeeez, not this again. Nothing but trouble with it on Hd-dvd, and why don't they just include a separate DVD in the set? I want my movie label on the disc not a dvd version thanks.

Comcast deal to buy NBC is done, will be announced Thursday

Dec 2nd 2009 12:08AM (Engadget)
I think that Comcast is more interested in Universal than it is in NBC. What better way to have a film library readily available for your cable systems? NBC is really worthless right now, it is Universal. I wonder what this means for Blu-ray from Universal. Comcast surely wants us buying through cable not out buying software.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player?

Oct 25th 2009 11:46PM (Engadget HD)
This reminds me of what happened to me last year. I have Dish Network Sat. and they let you use unlimited external hard drives, so I have three 750gb drives full of HD content, mainly movies. One of them failed. Tried everything even with Seagate, the content is gone. I did not make a backup because digital rights management will not allow it. This is NOT how I want to own a collection of entertainment, here one day gone the next, thanks I'll take my Blu-rays and DVD's on my shelf that I know are safely there for good anyday over digital files.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player?

I agree that files are the future, but it's a long ways away. There are so many downloading companies and streaming that it seems ill-gotten to say the public was unsure during a format war of 2 disc formats....now we have dozens of options, but not a single one the quality of Blu-ray. It's going to take a long time for that, our country doesn't even have the bandwidth.

Poll: What is the best Blu-ray player?

In my opinion, the best is the PS3, but I also own a Samsung bd-p2550 and that is the only one I know of in a decent price range (though it has been discontinued) that has the Reon HQV processor and I use it for all of my DVD's for upscaling. It also has the benefit of processing the Blu-ray discs with HQV processing, which, and I make this clear IN MY OPINION, makes the blu-ray picture look better than the PS3.

Starz launching 5 new HD channels next year

Oct 22nd 2009 12:40PM (Engadget HD)
Ben, I couldn't agree more. If they kept the original aspect ratio (all 2:35:1 Cinemascope wide films are downsized to 16:9) I might be more excited but all these pay channels crop the widescreen films, and I won't watch them. I would feel different if they were in their original aspect ratio. That said, there is still nothing like a good Blu-ray with so much less video compression and lossless audio. I got an ad from DirecTV saying they are showing movies in 1080p that are "the same quality as Blu-ray." What BS, the sound is severely compressed and so is the picture on sat or cable.
