I searched the Xbox.com forums. Apparently according to the support Twitter feed, a lot of the avatar marketplace and awards haven't been updated yet. Thus, the problem.

I haven't tooled around with it too much. But I've done enough to know that all of my purchased avatar gear, as well as my avatar awards, are unusable. What the hell?

I'm going to second the Family Video thing. I have one a few doors down, and I've picked up numerous games from them for under $30, some that were only out a few months. They always clean them, and then you have 30 days to detect any flaws and exchange it.
