Metareview: MLB '08 The Show

Mar 8th 2008 11:32AM (Joystiq Playstation)
For anyone who plays fantasy baseball, this game is ideal, as you can build custom teams and play other guys in your fantasy ball league online if they have a PS3.

The hitting is damned hard to learn, but that just makes it that more realistic. Baseball games used to just be a weak simulation that was just pushing buttons and not really learning any new skills. With this game, plate patience and having a good batting eye and lightning quick timing make all the difference. For the first time I feel like I'm actually gaining a whole new appreciation of real baseball from a video game. Obviously if you're not a baseball fan, there's no reason to get the game, but if you are, it's worth a buy, not just a rental. I use gamefly for almost all games, but I bought this one due to the infinite replay value.

Ninja Theory concept art hints at new game

Feb 20th 2008 10:23AM (Joystiq Playstation)
This is just a guess, but the name of one of the newly created forum admins on the Ninja Theory website is Monkey. I wonder if that's a name of a character in the new game or something...

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and definitely Children of Men.

Looks kind of sci fi based on the concept art. Coooooool.

EA getting used to PS3 development - but 'not quite' there

Feb 1st 2008 4:30PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I've had it with EA's excuses. Ratchet & Clank is flawless, Uncharted is flawless, and they perform better than anything EA has come up with to date. EA is just a mediocre developer for the PS3. Orange Box is broken, Skate is broken, Madden was broken. People paid money for all of those games on the PS3, in fact they paid the same as people paid for the Xbox, but because EA is doing a sub-standard job, PS3 customers are getting the shaft. The only way to solve this problem is to stop buying their products until they get it right.

PS Fanboy 2007: Disappointment of the Year

Dec 22nd 2007 10:56AM (Joystiq Playstation)
A.Creed was a bit slow in the middle, and it is a little repetitive, but the game got amazing towards the last 3rd of it and very challenging (fighting 10 Templars is NOT easy, even on medium difficulty). I thought it was a very good game overall, the only annoyance was the crashing issues. I've never heard of the 360 version being better than the PS3 version, if anything the PS3 version was graphically superior, and the patch fixed the crashing issues, so how could it be the biggest disappointment of the year?

Heavenly Sword was also fantastic. It wasn't THAT short, Gears of War was shorter, Uncharted was also shorter. It didn't feel as polished and didn't have the great writing/story flow that Uncharted had, but it was a fun game and I for one loved the Six-Axis shooting stuff. That level when Kai is hanging upside down on the gondola cable picking off snipers is one of the coolest things I've seen in terms of gameplay.

Lair sucked. It could have been cool but rather than releasing a gameplay improvement patch, the developers got all whiny and defensive and said it was all in everyone's head even though EVERY reviewer and most people who played it had the same problems. That is the disappointment of the year.

Orange Box was disappointing from the point that EA is completely inept at getting a game to run smoothly on the PS3 for some reason.

Why isn't Madden on the list, speaking of EA screwups?

PS3 sales drastically improve in November NPD data

Dec 14th 2007 11:59AM (Joystiq Playstation)
@Poprocker--

I got the RROD twice in 3 months and sold my 3rd Xbox 360 with games, got the 60GB PS3 and never looked back. Everything about the PS3 is better except for Xbox Live kick's PSN's butt, but Home will take care of that.

Assassin's Creed finally gets patched

Dec 11th 2007 5:15PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I actually fixed the game before the patch by switching from 1080i to 720p. As soon as I did that the crashes went away and it performed smoothly. The funny thing is the image at 720p actually looks identical to how it looked at 1080i, minus the screen tearing. I wonder if the main bug was with upscaling?

The framerate is still inconsistent, but you don't really notice it until you go somewhere where the framerate is optimal, and suddenly the camera pan is fantastic and feels like 60fps, like in the castle in Acre where you have to assassinate William.

Too bad the game has so many redundant tasks. Not sure why they couldn't have made it more like a medeival GTA. I thought that was what it was supposed to be like, but so many of the tasks aside from the main assassination missions are copy-and-pasted that it's clear they got either lazy or spent too much time focusing on game physics and graphics (which are outstanding by the way).

A quick exploration of PS3 game delays

Nov 24th 2007 8:18PM (Joystiq Playstation)
neither Uncharted nor R&C were delayed at all and they are AWESOME. In fact, Insomniac got R&C out within a year of Resistance and R&C is the coolest platformer I've played yet. I don't see what everyone is complaining about. Some developers have more skillz, some need to get better skillz, and that's that.

Really, there is no Bioshock for PS3

Nov 14th 2007 3:06PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Back before I sold my piece of junk 360 (it broke THREE times), I played Bioshock, and I thought it was fantastic. What it lacked in graphical detail it more than made up for in great story/art direction/gameplay. They put a lot of imagination into it, and it was nice to see a FPS where you're not just shooting everything all of the time. The AI in that game was also pleasantly challenging, and you could tell 2K really put a lot of work into keeping the game interesting from beginning to end.

It's pretty much the only game out there that's a 360 exclusive that would warrant buying a 360 just to play, but then again because the damned console breaks so much it's probably not worth it.
