Metareview: MLB '08 The Show
Mar 8th 2008 11:32AM (Joystiq Playstation)The hitting is damned hard to learn, but that just makes it that more realistic. Baseball games used to just be a weak simulation that was just pushing buttons and not really learning any new skills. With this game, plate patience and having a good batting eye and lightning quick timing make all the difference. For the first time I feel like I'm actually gaining a whole new appreciation of real baseball from a video game. Obviously if you're not a baseball fan, there's no reason to get the game, but if you are, it's worth a buy, not just a rental. I use gamefly for almost all games, but I bought this one due to the infinite replay value.

Dec 22nd 2007 10:56AM (Joystiq Playstation)Heavenly Sword was also fantastic. It wasn't THAT short, Gears of War was shorter, Uncharted was also shorter. It didn't feel as polished and didn't have the great writing/story flow that Uncharted had, but it was a fun game and I for one loved the Six-Axis shooting stuff. That level when Kai is hanging upside down on the gondola cable picking off snipers is one of the coolest things I've seen in terms of gameplay.
Lair sucked. It could have been cool but rather than releasing a gameplay improvement patch, the developers got all whiny and defensive and said it was all in everyone's head even though EVERY reviewer and most people who played it had the same problems. That is the disappointment of the year.
Orange Box was disappointing from the point that EA is completely inept at getting a game to run smoothly on the PS3 for some reason.
Why isn't Madden on the list, speaking of EA screwups?
PS3 sales drastically improve in November NPD data
Dec 14th 2007 11:59AM (Joystiq Playstation)I got the RROD twice in 3 months and sold my 3rd Xbox 360 with games, got the 60GB PS3 and never looked back. Everything about the PS3 is better except for Xbox Live kick's PSN's butt, but Home will take care of that.
Assassin's Creed finally gets patched
Dec 11th 2007 5:15PM (Joystiq Playstation)The framerate is still inconsistent, but you don't really notice it until you go somewhere where the framerate is optimal, and suddenly the camera pan is fantastic and feels like 60fps, like in the castle in Acre where you have to assassinate William.
Too bad the game has so many redundant tasks. Not sure why they couldn't have made it more like a medeival GTA. I thought that was what it was supposed to be like, but so many of the tasks aside from the main assassination missions are copy-and-pasted that it's clear they got either lazy or spent too much time focusing on game physics and graphics (which are outstanding by the way).
A quick exploration of PS3 game delays
Nov 24th 2007 8:18PM (Joystiq Playstation)Really, there is no Bioshock for PS3
Nov 14th 2007 3:06PM (Joystiq Playstation)It's pretty much the only game out there that's a 360 exclusive that would warrant buying a 360 just to play, but then again because the damned console breaks so much it's probably not worth it.
