NY Times sings praises for Ratchet & Clank

Oct 31st 2007 5:09PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I bought Ratchet & Clank and Guitar Hero 3 on the same day and I'm honestly having more fun playing R&C. The game is killer, the variety to the levels and what you can do is huge, the pace never slows, it's consistently funny, the weapons are clever, and of course the graphics are amazing. It seems like they used HDD cacheing pretty aggressively, much like Oblivion did on the 360, but unlike Oblivion, I've noticed almost no dropped frames and the detail in the distance is great. This game is the best game for the PS3 yet, and better than everything I've played on the 360 in every respect except for Bioshock, but that's a completely different genre game.

Capcom announces Lost Planet for PS3

No game developer owes us anything. But they're the ones who made a HUGE DEAL about it and kept saying "we're going to make a HUGE announcement on Wednesday that's going to blow away PS3 owners", and it turns out all it is is a stupid port of a year old game. Big whoop.

The only port I would be excited about is Bioshock.

Capcom announces Lost Planet for PS3

Capcom sucks and they make mediocre games. I played Lost Planet on the 360 and it was nothing special. There were some fun parts and the game play was OK but nothing worth getting excited over.

I also bought Dead Rising back before I sold my 360 and it was so frustrating that I returned it. The save structure has WAY too few locations you can save at, which means if you lose a boss battle, you have to spend over 30 minutes of game play just getting back to the boss, only to get killed again and then have to tread all the way back to some remote location in the mall with no save point anywhere near it. Nobody can turn gameplay into a tedious chore like Capcom. Then to cap it off, it's incredibly easy to accidentally erase ALL of your progress and have to start the whole damned game over from the beginning. I know 4 other people who accidentally erased their save and I did too, because the save menu says "restore to your last location" and doesn't warn you that that means "erase ALL your progress and start game over from beginning". The game only got good reviews because most reviewers only play a couple of levels and the problems with Dead Rising's horrible save structure come up after the first few hours of play.

I suspect Capcom doesn't test their games thoroughly before they release them.
Why should we care about a year old port by a company that makes the 360 priority #1 and only makes average games? Puhleeeze!

Grand Theft Auto IV features 16 player multiplayer

Oct 16th 2007 4:24PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Oh, and a firmware upgrade could allow the 256MB currently reserved for System memory to become available for applications too, it's not limited by the hardware. It's the OS that determines what goes in and out of RAM, not the hardware. No firmware upgrade is going to increase the size of DVD9.

@4.
The non-diversified RAM and limit of DVD9 both suck. RAM issues can be remedied by HD cache-ing though. The only workaround DVD9 size limit is extremely aggressive data compression/decompression, which will cause lag and more load times. Assassin's Creed already said they were having a hard time with the 360 DVD9 size limit, but they didn't say peep about having issues with PS3 RAM. I think that tells you all you need to know about which one is the larger problem.

Why is Red Octane giving PS3 a wireless dongle?

Who cares if the 40GB only has 2 USB ports? Haven't you guys ever heard of a USB hub? Of course you'll be able to play Rockband on the 40gb model. A cheaper console means you have to buy more add-ons for extra features, Xbox 360 does the same thing. No surprise there.

PS3 Fanboy review: Folklore

Oct 11th 2007 9:38PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I played the demo, and LOVED the combat system. It's similar to fishing, you really have to wrestle with some of your stronger opponents to beat them, pressing buttons is more just like hooking them on a lure, and you have to reel them in with the Sixaxis. It's definitely the coolest implementation of the Sixaxis yet, and Heavenly Sword's use of it was already very cool.

Unfortunately, the fact that there's almost no voice acting completely robs the game of personality. Do you really want to have to read a game? I love reading graphic novels, but the whole bloody point of a graphic novel is that it's not animated and happens in your head. When you have every sound for every animated action and even very elaborate background sound design complete with spooky music, and then you find there are no voices for most of the exposition, it feels like something is just wrong. The developer majorly screwed up on that, they must have either had a deadline they couldn't make using voices (the final voice acting is often the last part done in the making of games) or just decided to not spend money on it, since voice acting in games is very costly.

The other lame part is how enemies respawn after you kill them if you accidentally backtrack, including very difficult ones, which induces an incredible amount of time wasting. I hate games that respawn enemies when you backtrack, it makes you feel like you never accomplished anything.

I love the styling of the game and combat system is amazing, and the character/folk design is really top notch, but unfortunately two very important gameplay things got the shaft and I think that makes Folklore a rental or buy used title.

Kaz Hirai believes disc formats aren't dying yet

Oct 6th 2007 8:01AM (Joystiq Playstation)
With downloaded games, what happens when your hard drive fails? No game! The failure rate of hard drives is 100%, it just takes time for that to happen.
I want my games on a disc, except for Warhawk and small arcade-ish type games that you're not going to want to trade-in later.

Hands-on: Clive Barker's Jericho demo

Sep 30th 2007 7:06PM (Joystiq Playstation)
I played the demo and it sucked, it wasn't even worth the time it took to download. It doesn't even allow you to invert the X/Y axis. The distancing between you and the characters seemed out of whack, like they'd look farther away than they actually were, and the graphics looked like total mud. The game is 10 steps back from Gears of War in terms of gameplay and 20 steps back from Bioshock in terms of actual scariness and inventive story/characters. I thought the story was cool, but the game doesn't have much to do with that story, it seems to just be tacked on and you spend most of your time just repeatedly shooting ugly pusbags that aren't even scary because they're too gorey and just seem like ugly cartoons.

Bioshock is the best FPS I've ever played, I didn't even mind the goofy looking character hand because the game/action/story/weapons/pacing is so brilliantly designed. I sold my 360 after I beat it because the piece of crap got the 3 rings of death twice and ate my Guitar Hero II disc, but sorry guys, there still aren't any FPS for the PS3 as good as Bioshock or Gears of War.
I love my PS3, and am happy with Heavenly Sword (not too short like or bad controls like stupid reviewers say) and Warhawk (tons of fun but half-assed graphics) but I hope some games show up soon that are actually as good as Bioshock or GOW.

PS3 Fanboy review: Heavenly Sword

Daniel said-->"Guys, be honest... It's a pretty game, but ANY game that you can complete in 6 hours by mashing buttons, has a laughable AI, PS1-PS2 game mechanics does NOT deserve an 8 score... If this game came out next to Metal Gear, everybody would be dissin' it..."

You can't complete it by mashing buttons. You have to time your defenses and attacks and use the right ones. You're the first one I've heard that says HS's AI is laughable. How is it laughable? Which part of the game, and which character did you find had poor AI? When I play it, if one enemy is behind me while I'm attacking another enemy, they'll often come at me when I'm vulnerable, unlike actual dumb AI button mashers like Dynasty Warriors, where they just wait around for you to kill them all. In the mission where Kai has to shoot all the guards coming at her in that maze-like storage room, they duck out of the way of your arrows, and will take different paths to avoid them. You call that laughable AI?

And as for the completely retarded PS1-PS2 game mechanics comment, which games on those consoles allows you to steer projectiles with the movement of your controller, eh? What games on those consoles allow you to pick up practically ANYTHING and use it as a weapon, whether it's the body of someone you just killed or a watermelon?

Methinks you haven't played the game and are just talking out of your ass and I also bet you think an ugly white piece of hardware that breaks all the time, scratches discs and doesn't support games that have more than 5GB of data is the best gaming system ever.
