Editorial: Waiter, there's a Nazi theme in my Android Market (updated)

Aug 13th 2010 3:58AM (Engadget)
Technically it looks like this app may violate the Android developer content policy, so it should probably be removed (along with thousands of other apps apparently).

http://www.android.com/market/terms/developer-content-policy.html

I personally believe people should be free to post this in the market if they want even though it greatly offends me, but I don't make the rules. Google has every right to remove any application that isn't playing by their rules. Allowing sideloading of apps is a good middle ground between all out censorship and an "anything goes" wide open market. The bigger problem is that Google needs to do a major overhaul of the market and do better filtering, and also make it easier for users to flag offensive and spam apps so they can be removed quickly.

@Jyve
Try using appbrain.com and the appbrain app to browse the market. It does a really good job of filtering the crappy apps, among other neat things.

Ask Engadget: best FM transmitter out there?

Aug 12th 2010 11:34PM (Engadget)
Most cars built in the last few years have some kind of audio input, but if you're getting an older car that has a replaceable stereo, your best choice would be to buy an aftermarket head unit with integrated iPod/mp3, usb, or aux cable input built in.

An FM transmitter should be your last resort. I've tried them many times and depending on the car and the transmitter it could be decent, or more likely absolutely unusable, but never nearly as good as a wired connection.

Castlevania Puzzle: Encore of the Night debuts on App Store

@seishino
The funny part is that a lot of SotN's sprites were actually borrowed from Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, so even SotN wasn't totally original.

Sharp keeps going with the Sidekick look, intros FX for AT&T

Jul 19th 2010 3:11PM (Engadget)
Haha, it looks as if they just rebranded some leftover Sidekicks they had laying around in the back of the Sharp warehouse for five years.

iOS 4.0.1 hitting iPhones right this second (update: 3.2.1 for iPads, too)

Jul 15th 2010 2:56PM (Engadget)
@Graham J
Sure you can. I'm not trying to start a flame war, but android phones can get small patches and updates to their ROMs instead of downloading the entire thing again. The last ota update I had was only about 600kb. With iOS you just download it on your PC though so it's not that big of a deal.

Android 2.2 Froyo FRF85 now available for Nexus One (update: official)

@mehal88
I've installed pretty much every leaked froyo update manually on my N1 and I have never had anything wiped on my phone, so you should be ok.
