Wii not even remotely region-free

Sep 15th 2006 8:41PM (Joystiq)
another day, another broken promise from Nintendo (and suprisingly not from Sony)

fanboys of all shapes and sizes, this goes to show how your loyalty in ANY company goes rewarded. Nintendo never changed from the early 1990-era ways, Sony never wanted to look like they did, and Microsoft, well they're on a mission to make everyone think EXCESSIVE DRM is okay, even though it's not.

I guess you can you say I love the hamburger but hate how the cow is killed. But that's just business, kind of like nature: it's a vicious cycle but for the most part it works. Get over it.

This Blu-ray ad lacks something...

not to mention a less crappy picture.

Nintendo's (sometimes sordid) past now available on Google news archives

Sep 6th 2006 2:25PM (Joystiq)
Nintendo had a monopoly on video games way before Sony did, and they've done some pretty messed up things to keep it that way up until they shorthanded themselves against Sony. Back then Nintendo's image was just as bad, if not worse than Sony's is right now.

It was only through being beaten out for 1st place in two generations (N64+GC) that they finally started changing the way they went about business. Maybe they realized trying to compete with a company bent on touting their (own) technological prowess, it wasn't the right direction. Nintendo probably knew they couldn't last in a pissing contest with the hopes the public had of the Sony portable and the PS3 WAY back in 2004.

Their business direction is different but I sincerely doubt that they're intentions are much different than they were in 1990 when they held the VG industry in their hand.

Summing it all up: NINTENDO FANBOYS: Nintendo is NOT an underdog company, they are far from it, just because they haven't had luck with their consoles lately doesn't mean they haven't shown their own arrogance in their portables/their constant redesigns which often render previous versions of the same portable almost obsolete, as well as dropping support (GBA-GBA SP, DS - DSLITE)

In defense of Sony's HDMI.O.U. [update 1]

Sep 4th 2006 2:24PM (Joystiq)
All of you fanboys need to stop the spin

Here's how it works:

Component (the HD analog cables) can THEORITICALLY accept a 1080p source, but only the capability exists right now. You have to ask whether the PS3 can output 1080p through the component port AND, most importantly, if your TV's own componenet port can ACCEPT a 1080p signal FROM the PS3.

Prior to only about a few months ago, they're were very few TV's that accepted a 1080p connection through HDMI (save the more expensive models), MUCH, and i mean MUCH less through the component port. There's a big push to make HDMI a household name, and eventually phase component out. Analog like composite and S-video the big companies know they can't, at least not anytime soon because there's WAY too many legacy video and audio systmes that use it. With component it's more of an issue of thinning the herd.

Surprise! Burnout 5 coming to Xbox 360 and PS3

Aug 29th 2006 10:52AM (Joystiq)
Maybe because Wii won't be able to process the highly detailed+giant world EA wants to make for the next Burnout? I'm pretty sure it'll get a version more optimised for the Wii or just nothing at all.

Joystiq, you really need to get rid of some of your Nintendo fanboys, ahem, I mean bloggers.

Is Texas Hold 'em on XBLA broken?

What are you talking about Mr Kahn? I'm using a 32inch Vizio LCD tv right now that I got at Costco 3 days ago for 800...its not bad of a tv at all too, professional/colorful packaging, 8ms response time, HDMI, 2 component inputs, 1366xsomething resolution, PC input

You're only paying 1300 or more if u want step-up models from Panasonic, Sony, etc...for 800 dollars this 32 inch LCD flat, mind u, screen has been working pretty good for me (its the third HDTV in my house now for my bedroom)

I cant complain about a free game, tho i'll be expecting a patch for the game-dropping and slow paced multiplayer matches soon after the game charges a premium for download again

Why fanboys make for poor marketers

Competitive gaming TV with LANBus

Aug 14th 2006 7:03PM (Joystiq)
I like the thought of trying to put a Real World spin on the often tried idea of televising competitive gaming, but here, the show didn't pull it off very good. With reality shows, the duration of the show really isn't jam packed with action or tense moments kind of like how 24 or Lost. Reality shows, at least good reality shows, are inclined more toward trying to create a bond between you and all the people involved in the show. Survivor when it first came out gave a lot of time to show the perspective of the people on the island, and they were varied.

With this show, all I saw were 5 young men with beards and the tomboy-ish girl. ALL of them are stock characters when it comes to portraying gamers, professional or not. Survivor wouldn't have been as interesting as it was if the whole cast was made up of Crocodile Dundee type people, who would usually agree to such a stunt as staying on an island.

Basically, what im trying to say is that if competitive game shows are to be succesful in the mainstream, then a LOT more emphasis needs to be placed on the gamers, rather than the games. I know it sounds like it defeats the purpose of it, but you have to realize that in the eyes of the public, gamers like us still hold stigma and are strereotyped. Make a program that shows not only the games, but also team management, have leaders form progressively within the group, and show that they're human like us, and can have personal problems that interfere with such gaming. In other words, make the players interesting! Compel viewers enough to find out what happens to them each week.

Last note, the game featured here was UT2K4, probably a VERY bad choice for a televised match. It's gameplay is too fast and you can't really put an emphasis on either team without taking away viewing time from the other. Games shown should be fairly easy to follow, and where each competing side is seen on the same screen at least most of the time. Im pretty sure someone's going to disagree with me, everyone's entitled to an opinion of course, but we all have to remember that every single one of us here at joystiq are nowhere near enough for a production company to consider making a show, or calling it a commercial success.
