Metal Slug 2 fires onto Virtual Console

Dec 1st 2008 12:56PM (Joystiq)
The real issue here is control. I know many Metal Slug purists who were hugely let down by the fact that every control scheme for the Anthology was total crap. The best was the GameCube controller, but even then you had to use a squishy analogue joystick for a game that was built for a digital micro-switch stick.

Anyway, the potential of using the classic controller and playing this game properly is almost enough to get me to buy it.

Thanks for taking the time out of your hobby curing cancer to let this internet blog about electronic entertainment know how you feel!

PSP firmware 3.50 enables full 333MHz clockspeed

Jun 23rd 2007 3:39PM (Joystiq)
If 333mhz is what it takes for game designers to break that terrible bond holding back FUN and INNOVATION then I'm all for it. Otherwise, at this stage, what's the point?

333mhz, now 25% more fun!

I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Today's just thought of game video: City of Heroes inventions

May 18th 2007 1:31AM (Joystiq)
How is creating an item or power from a 'recipe' that is made by the game's designers considered NEW powers? The video didn't do a very good job explaining how the user has any control over what is being created.

Wii gets some negative press

Are any of these points valid though?

From what I understand unless you consider flicks of the wrist exercise, most games aren't going to be that strenuous. Does anyone really think that designers won't take into account that game players are not going to abide ludicrous amounts of movement to play a game? (besides the ones purposefully designed for this) I'd like to give the designers more credit until we see some real games.

Also, games no working on small TV. What? Where did this come from? Did the reviewer try several different sizes of TV? The motion sensing is not based on how big the TV is, it's based on the motion sensor bar.

They've also got wiifitness.com

I've been waiting a while for a video game that will actually get me to move around. Maybe a rhythm game based on squat thrusts? Of Bicep curls? Maybe it'll come with a water based weight peripheral, who knows!

I've got one of these little guys. It apes everything people like about the PSP (video, music, homebrew, emulators) and leaves out the bad (UMD, zero tolerance homebrew policy). You don't have to convert you video into some arcane format either. I rather like it.

Some Cons:
- The jostick on the old units are unarguably terrible. Good thing they improved it
- You need to buy an SD card to really get full use, adds to the cost
- You need good AA's to get full use. As in 2500+ mAh. Not your average generic brand. I get about 5 hours of battery life out of my 2500mAh batteries, though some people report as low as one hour with generic brands

All things considered, cheaper than a PSP, does about the same thing. Despite the fact that the PSP looks considerably different, I've had people on the street say "Oh Cool! A PSP!"...

How do ads in games benefit gamers?

May 5th 2006 3:04PM (Joystiq)
It's getting to the point where advertisements legitimize media. Sure, the extra money from ads allows better production values, but if a magazine like Maxim or something (Cosmo, if you will) didn't have any ads in it? That's part of the content, the experience, of the magazine itself.

These magazines sell a lifestyle, and the ads reinforce that lifestyle. If the ads in a video game reinforce the gamer lifestyle, they also add legitimacy.

It says "There are other people like you who are also willing to pay money for things like games and other products you care about" which in turn makes the user feel like something larger, like they're a part of the world.

Advertisements tie us together. They're a global constant. And hey, they give us something to talk about.
