SWTOR finds a companion for the Jedi knight

Aug 16th 2010 12:19AM (Massively)
You're a perfect example of the overly melodramatic people who post comments on this blog and others like it. You think that your opinion on what makes a good is the only possible way to make a suspenseful game.

"Not every MMO player cares about story." True, but then again not every MMO player doesn't give a shit about story either. And we've never had an MMO with the kind of story that BioWare is putting into TOR. I personally am fucking thrilled that their questing and leveling isn't going to be a total after though like a lot of MMOs where its' "hey here's some boring grinding quest to kill time with for 80 levels, and then you get to have some fun at the end." That's a major barrier to entry for a lot of gamers, they want to have fun right away not grind though boring repetitive quest for weeks before they get to anything that's fun. I think people don't realize yet how much better the questing and leveling will be in TOR, but I have a feeling that once they get a taste of that they will never want to go back to reading a little text window that tells them to go kill 10 rats in the next WoW xpac.

"I am worried that they will try so hard to focus on the gimmicks that a few people will actually like and appreciate who typically play single player games, and completely alienate the MMO fanbase"

You're basing that on what exactly? I think they've said time and again that there will be all the traditional MMO elements like raiding, PVP, crafting, and everything else you want from an MMO in the game as well. The difference is they don't want to talk about how they are like other MMOs, they want to talk about how they are unlike any MMO on the market. Maybe you think they should reinvent the wheel as far as game play goes, but I don't think that is really what the masses want. I mean people have been following the same basic game play mechanics for other games like FPS, with the only real difference being a new story and better graphics. And look at Starcraft II as well. It's sold a fuck ton, and it is basically the same game play as the original, just improved in a few small areas and giving a very nice new coat of paint. I think the worst thing they could do would be to change the game play too much and screw up a good thing. The trinity system (which is in TOR) has been such a pillar of MMO gaming for so long because it just works so insanely well. I don't think you need to throw the baby out with the bath water for the sake of innovation.

BioWare confirms Jedi Advanced Classes

Aug 13th 2010 5:45PM (Massively)
It depends on what advanced class you play for your Jedi Knight. If you play the Guardian tank class you are going to be wearing more heavy armor like we see in the Clone Wars cartoon. But if you chose the DPS build, they will be wearing mostly just robes and light armor. So there will still be just the plane robes look from the DPS Knight, and also from the Jedi Consular, but the Jedi Knight tank will be wearing the heavy armor.

The Old Republic's space combat detailed in PC Gamer

Aug 9th 2010 12:39PM (Massively)
You have played SWG right? That was one of the worst MMOs of all time. It launched with ZERO content. Sure you could craft a bunch of stuff, but when you actually want to I don't know have FUN there wasn't much to do. Let me go to a stupid mission terminal and get THE SAME QUEST over and over to grind XP and credits.

If TOR had no space at all it would still take a massive dump over SWG. People aren't even going to care about space combat in a few weeks. It might be the big topic of the moment, but people will get over it once the game gets closer to launch.

Well via Darth Hater's live blog of the SWTOR Comic Con panel, they just confirmed ship customization and ship combat. That's a pretty big reveal, and the panel just started.

The Mob loses: Microsoft cancels 1 vs. 100

Jul 15th 2010 11:13AM (Joystiq)
I liked 1 vs 100 a lot, but I'm interested to see what direction they take that technology. I'm interested to see what new kind of game they might be able to come up with that could be ever better then 1 vs 100.

Bioware's Erickson: TOR is your dream game

Jul 10th 2010 5:53PM (Massively)
Yeah but there is going to be PVP, there is going to be raiding. There will be stuff to do at max level that will keep people playing even if they've seen all the story there is to see. The only real difference is they are going to make the questing actually kick ass instead of being boring as shit. I'm sorry I don't care how good a story any MMO might have, if you are expecting me to read it in a text window then you can forget about it. However, if you present it in a way that's entertaining then I'll for seeing more. I love the way BioWare tells a story.

Just look at the gaming market in general. The big trend is to get people involved that aren't normally gamers. BioWare is clearly trying to do the same with MMO's by making a game that you don't need to be a MMO gamer already to enjoy and I think it is going to work. They are going to pull people into this world with familiar gameplay to other million selling titles that they produce and once their hooks are in, you won't want to leave.

Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR hype in hyperspace

Jun 28th 2010 4:22PM (Massively)
Why does this game have so much hype? Maybe it's because websites keep writing massive article about how much hype the game has. I'm pretty sure I've already read several articles on massively alone asking the same question this article ask.

This game has a lot of hype and for good reasons.

1. It's Star Wars. That's one of the biggest IPs ever. You put Star Wars on anything and people are going to take notice.

2. It's from BioWare. They already have a huge following of loyal fans (much like Blizzard does) and a reputation for making excellent games. That fact that BioWare is making it is going to get people hyped.

3. What we've seen so far looks really good. The game might not be this massively revolutionary game that some people where hoping it would be, but it still looks amazing. For the first time ever I'm excited about the story of an MMO, questing, and rolling an alt.

I think most of the hate comes from jaded MMO players who've played ever crappy MMO to ever be released and have seen it all. BioWare is smartly in my opinion marking this towards WoW players by making it familiar enough for them to jump right into the game and feel at home, and people who don't play MMOs because they enjoy a good story and aren't interested in grinding their way though 80 levels of the same 5 or 10 quest. They've got too much money in this to risk breaking the mold of success too much, but to me that doesn't mean the game isn't going to be excellent.
