SWTOR finds a companion for the Jedi knight
Aug 16th 2010 12:19AM (Massively)"Not every MMO player cares about story." True, but then again not every MMO player doesn't give a shit about story either. And we've never had an MMO with the kind of story that BioWare is putting into TOR. I personally am fucking thrilled that their questing and leveling isn't going to be a total after though like a lot of MMOs where its' "hey here's some boring grinding quest to kill time with for 80 levels, and then you get to have some fun at the end." That's a major barrier to entry for a lot of gamers, they want to have fun right away not grind though boring repetitive quest for weeks before they get to anything that's fun. I think people don't realize yet how much better the questing and leveling will be in TOR, but I have a feeling that once they get a taste of that they will never want to go back to reading a little text window that tells them to go kill 10 rats in the next WoW xpac.
"I am worried that they will try so hard to focus on the gimmicks that a few people will actually like and appreciate who typically play single player games, and completely alienate the MMO fanbase"
You're basing that on what exactly? I think they've said time and again that there will be all the traditional MMO elements like raiding, PVP, crafting, and everything else you want from an MMO in the game as well. The difference is they don't want to talk about how they are like other MMOs, they want to talk about how they are unlike any MMO on the market. Maybe you think they should reinvent the wheel as far as game play goes, but I don't think that is really what the masses want. I mean people have been following the same basic game play mechanics for other games like FPS, with the only real difference being a new story and better graphics. And look at Starcraft II as well. It's sold a fuck ton, and it is basically the same game play as the original, just improved in a few small areas and giving a very nice new coat of paint. I think the worst thing they could do would be to change the game play too much and screw up a good thing. The trinity system (which is in TOR) has been such a pillar of MMO gaming for so long because it just works so insanely well. I don't think you need to throw the baby out with the bath water for the sake of innovation.

Aug 9th 2010 12:39PM (Massively)If TOR had no space at all it would still take a massive dump over SWG. People aren't even going to care about space combat in a few weeks. It might be the big topic of the moment, but people will get over it once the game gets closer to launch.

Jul 10th 2010 5:53PM (Massively)Just look at the gaming market in general. The big trend is to get people involved that aren't normally gamers. BioWare is clearly trying to do the same with MMO's by making a game that you don't need to be a MMO gamer already to enjoy and I think it is going to work. They are going to pull people into this world with familiar gameplay to other million selling titles that they produce and once their hooks are in, you won't want to leave.

Jun 28th 2010 4:22PM (Massively)This game has a lot of hype and for good reasons.
1. It's Star Wars. That's one of the biggest IPs ever. You put Star Wars on anything and people are going to take notice.
2. It's from BioWare. They already have a huge following of loyal fans (much like Blizzard does) and a reputation for making excellent games. That fact that BioWare is making it is going to get people hyped.
3. What we've seen so far looks really good. The game might not be this massively revolutionary game that some people where hoping it would be, but it still looks amazing. For the first time ever I'm excited about the story of an MMO, questing, and rolling an alt.
I think most of the hate comes from jaded MMO players who've played ever crappy MMO to ever be released and have seen it all. BioWare is smartly in my opinion marking this towards WoW players by making it familiar enough for them to jump right into the game and feel at home, and people who don't play MMOs because they enjoy a good story and aren't interested in grinding their way though 80 levels of the same 5 or 10 quest. They've got too much money in this to risk breaking the mold of success too much, but to me that doesn't mean the game isn't going to be excellent.
