Levine: Occupy Wall Street and tea party mirror revolution in BioShock Infinite

Oct 28th 2011 7:57PM (Joystiq)
@343 Guilty Fart
Indeed. The world is already packed with plenty of sources of facile dorm-room-style political philosophizing. I don't need any in my video games, nor do I need any in my video games coverage. And when you strip away the silly veneer of social commentary from Bioshock, you're left with a mediocre shooter with a very cool setting. I suspect history will repeat itself.

Farewell, Friend Codes: Wii U to have single online identity and friends list [update]

Jun 9th 2011 12:55PM (Joystiq)
I understand the need to have a picture with each Joystiq post, but isn't it a big misleading to accompany Wii U posts with screen shots which Ninteno admitted are not taken from their system?

Here's what the 'new' New Xbox Experience looks like

I'd be happy with a black screen with some text on it if they would just boot right into my game list instead of forcing me into an advertising landing pane.

Star Raiders launch on XBLA this Wednesday

@JonahFalcon Yeah, I think I played it on 2600, too. Wasn't it the one that came with its own keypad controller?

Rage gameplay footage features murderous bots, volatile vehicles

May 5th 2011 1:48PM (Joystiq)
@SFX BIGANT Totally agree, and I really wonder why id is putting out these videos now. If you're releasing a game in a few months which looks very derivative of Borderlands and Fallout 3, I don't think you want to advertise it ahead of time. If you are going to show off your game, I think you try to show something _different_, which isn't this.

In the end, I'm glad that Rage's earlier release window forced Gearbox to change their game. Had they played it serious and dark, Borderlands wouldn't have been as fun for me as it turned out to be.

Star Ocean developer's real-time graphics demo is out of this world

Apr 26th 2011 5:56PM (Joystiq)
@Levi Do you really think that Epic, which is made the current generation of consoles its focus, is really designing an engine which will require $1500 worth of graphics hardware to run? Of course not. They are building a very scalable engine, which will be nice for people who do have nice PCs, but they are obviously targeting future consoles, and have lots of optimization and feature cutting to do. These consoles will not cost $1500. Silly, straw man argument.

Mass. town to consider lifting 29-year ban on coin-op games

Flash mob in Marshfield to play coin-op machines during next year's Pax East, anyone?

Skyrim 'mostly a DirectX 9 game,' PC mods could make it to consoles

Apr 20th 2011 10:06PM (Joystiq)
How is this even still an area of argument?

PC-developed games are more technologically sophisticated, but they are less profitable, and require a higher financial investment by the player to enjoy them. Console-developed games are not so technologically sophisticated, are way more profitable, and require a lower financial investment by the player to enjoy them. Those are the facts, and regardless of whether you prefer one platform over the other for game X, they really aren't up for debate, so why all the forum combat?

People drive cards; some people are automotive enthusiasts and really like to discuss cars. Do you see Internet forums where Porsche drivers and Volkswagen drivers argue the relative merits of their platforms? No.

Porsche drivers had decided that they want to spend more money to maximize their enjoyment of the driving experience, all the while knowing that US highways really aren't built to accommodate their potential, and understanding that the average consumer has neither the interest nor the funds to drive a Porsche.

Volkswagen drivers enjoy their vehicles, are fine with the limitations placed upon them with respect to the Porsche, and I doubt they make insipid arguments that Volkswagens are "better' because they're cheaper and more popular.

Yes, to some degree it's a shame we're not all driving Porsches on the Autobahn, and if we did, maybe we'd see a new generation of transportation infrastructure which would be more fun, but it's not realistic, so what's the point in hoping that it will happen? Conversely, why would you argue that highways full of Volkswagens are somehow "better" than highways filled with Porsches?

I suppose I really do know the answer: that people want to justify the platform that they've invested in. But that's just idiotic, isn't it?

Rage trailer has two tickets to the gun show

Apr 18th 2011 6:34PM (Joystiq)
So, basically id has made a Borderlands mod for Fallout 3. Works for me.
