Wii Warm Up: A good yarn

Jan 6th 2008 9:03PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I really feel that with a few, genre specific exceptions, too much story can really detract from a game, I really feel that story is incredibly important, but I feel that the story should drive the gameplay, rather than the other way around. Perfect Dark for the N64 will always be one of my favorite games of all time, the story was great, especially for an FPS at the time, but I could play any level of the single player campaign and still be completely engrossed in the gameplay, it lacks the urgency it had when I first completed the game, because I can't even try to really feel the world-saving stakes, but it's still a well-enough crafted game that I enjoy it thoroughly. Story driven games are seeping more and more out of the niche of the RPG, and more into other genres, and don't get me wrong, most of my favorite games are incredibly well-crafted RPGs, but I can't put them down and come back in a few months, when I come back, I have to start at the beginning, and I'd hate to have to do that with every game. Galaxy was great fun, I completed most of the game rather quickly because the gameplay was fantastic, and the beauty of it is, I can go back and play any star I want next year, and I will still enjoy it just as much. To sum it up, story is great, and I like to see it, but it shouldn't be central to all of them, and it isn't neccesary in all of them.

erm whoops, misread the prompt... my machine is actually pretty new, it runs crysis on high settings... but the ventilation is terrible and my psu won't support much growth. I'm running an intel quad-core and an 8800GT but with only 2 gigs of ddr2 and onboard sound. I'd love to turn my current box into an (overpowered) media center.

Wii Warm Up: The importance of Sonic

Oct 17th 2007 12:18PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm happy with Sonic in Brawl. I'm not so excited about snake, and not so much because he's not Nintendo, It's that he doesn't fit the lighthearted feel of the game. The folks from the zelda games and Samus straddle that line, but they're unreasonable enough, and easily modified enough, that I feel like they fit. But Sonic seems a perfect fit, I just hope future presentations of the game don't add characters from the periphery of the series, I'm okay with knuckles or tails, but if I see Amy Rose or that Bat chick I'll be pissed.

In fairness, I read a couple of Gaming blogs, and I don't know of any great games for PS3. That and the price point are the reason they can't sell anything. And the 10 year figure is from the same man who promised the world 1200 dollars if anyone could find a PS3 on store shelves. PS3 has some fantastic hardware, but it is losing the console war this gen. Hard. That may change if they get some good exclusives, but from what I've heard, heavenly sword was too short, and lair was awkward and generally disliked. those are the highly anticipated exclusives that have come out that I've heard about, that needed to be successful. Ratchet and Clank will do PS3 good, and when they get a God of War title out and bring down the price point they'll be in the game. But right now, the lack of exclusives and the price point doesn't give the PS3 a snowballs chance in hell against Xbox 360 and the Halo, and it has too small a market to compete with the Wii.
