Ask Massively: Free-to-play edition

Aug 5th 2010 1:50PM (Massively)
I'll take my F2P games after spending more than enough money on multiple P2P games and coming to find out I didn't enjoy them at all. I think the overall quality of the F2P games has risen quite a bit actually, and it's only getting higher with the more instanced, Guild Wars style F2P games that seem to be coming around the corner.

At least with F2P games I can try the game out and after I really feel I got my monies worth (if at all) I can drop some cash into the game. Whereas with many of the F2P mmo's, I didn't really feel like I was getting my $40-60+$10-15/month out of the game.

Plus, I always feel guilty if I don't play often, because it seems like I'm just wasting my time. I know that $10-15/month is only like 1 or 2 trips to the movies, but I don't go to the movies twice a month, or even once a month.

I can't wait to see what's coming up in the F2P world. My big problem now is finding items to spend my money on that I feel like are worth spending the money for.

Monday Night Combat's Assassin will stab you in the back, slap you around a little

Jul 30th 2010 8:58AM (Joystiq)
@Cleric

So you're mad that the assassin as the same abilities as every assassin ever? Why aren't they ripping of Metal Gear Solid? Or World of Warcraft? Or Dungeons and Dragons Online? Or Global Agenda? Or any of the games where you can go invisible, are in third person, and have a knife. That's a lot of games.

Basically the only skills the assassin has in common with the spy from TF2 is the fact that it can go invisible in stab people in the back, which is like every spy ever.

I don't think anyones actually looked at the skills for any of the classes or how the game is going to work and is going to disappointed when the game they thought was a TF2 clone doesn't play like TF2 at all.

The Sniper is still a sniper, like every other class based shooter, except he can place traps which is pretty interesting and shoot through multiple people, which you can do in other games, but it's not as explicit I suppose.

The Assault as a grenade launcher, assault rifle, and jet pack, so why don't we just say they ripped off of tribes for this class instead of TF2.

The support class is the most TF2 like class. It's basically the same minus the fact that it can actually place different kinds of turrents. I'll call it added depth.

I mean unless you want to say the classes are the same because they have the same weapons, it's still a pretty different game.

And it's not like they could have came up with other weapons/names for the classes anyways. Every class based shooter has the same types of classes, and name them in similar ways.

It makes the game easier to play for people who are bad at video games.

Monster Hunter Tri supports Wii Speak, bundled with accessory in Europe

Feb 1st 2010 8:08PM (Joystiq)
The difference between PSO and Monster Hunter is that Monster Hunter requires a lot more skill and has more depth to it.

In PSO, you can run around and kind of mindlessly kill anyone.

In Monster Hunter, you actually have to block, roll, and use items when you fight stuff, as well as the different types of attacks. Combat has a distinct flow to it that makes the game really, really fun.

Not to mention the seemingly endless crafting system and being able to take down monsters that often times don't even fit on the entire screen. The first time you really fight something big, you're going to shit your pants.

Also, when you kill things, they like flop on the ground, it's kind of weird, but cool at the same time.

PSP Go to have 16,000 pieces of downloadable content at launch (including old stuff)

Sep 28th 2009 10:00AM (Joystiq)
The reason they scrapped the conversion program is probably due to exploits that would allow for rampant piracy. Imagine if someone found a hole in the program that would allow anyone to play converted games if they bought them or not without any significant help. Sony would lose even more money. For me personally, this is my only my second PSP (sold my first one), and I am only really buying it to play tetris, mh:unite, peace walker, a couple ff games, and maybe one or two others. What a shame, it looks like every PSP game I want to buy will fit into my pocket. I can put my movies and music (if I ever wanted to), on the external memory.
