@tendoboy1984 I kind of agree with you. I don't think the world is sparsely populated though. Well, I do...but it's freaking Skyrim, not New Manhattan in the Fifth Element. Scandinavia is the model...and modern Scandinavia is pretty sparsely populated still. Olde Skandinavia is even more sparsely populated.
My problem is with the inappropriate re-use of assets. This game should NOT have been the source of an internet meme of the sort that it created. Bethesda has long focused heavily on its environments to the detriment of the individuals that live within them. I am happy that somebody finally forced them to make character models that weren't hideous, but they all still draw from the same set of stock quotes.
@Vidaluko Wait, even if the CPU/GPU were ten times faster, you STILL don't think they could afford a resolution bump and still squeeze out better performance? That's ridiculous. What would you be ok with? Do the CPU/GPU have to be 80 times faster before we start upping the rez?
It's quad core, it's a new chip.. I expect it will handle graphics as well as the iPad 2 did, but at a higher resolution. And remember, the dev can always make their target the iPad 2. The iPad HD will run that just fine and since it'll be at the "old" rez, all the new horsepower will be going straight to the performance.
@Crayola Q Pants ESQ Actually, I do think MS does notice something like under-delivering on hype. Someone who consistently promises too much loses credibility. The reason you hire someone like Molyneux is to deliver on hype, not fail to deliver on it. If you just want to make a competent RPG, you don't need Molyneux. However, like you said, he was making money. Unless he insisted on crazy compensation packages and more publicity, I doubt they would have minded if he quietly churned out more big sellers. I think the Kinect had something to do with it. He was singled out early on for that impressive (but somewhat pointless) Kinect demo with the kid (I forget the name now).. Has he even continued to work on that? Or anything like it? Does he even want to?
I can only speculate. But I will say that I am very happy to see him out from under anyone's umbrella.
@Nergy Actually, when I turn rumble off, I find I miss absolutely nothing important, and the experience is not hindered in any way. If the game needs rumble to be immersive, it's a crappy game. A good game will immerse you with or without rumble.
To me, rumble is more of a gimmick...one that was far inferior to just turning up the bass on the subwoofer. The most fascinating and non-lame use of rumble I ever encountered was the Wii's use of it on the menu screen when you moved the pointer between channels. This felt like it actually added some texture to the screen. However, in games, rumble is pretty much only used as a substitute subwoofer.
This new idea basically adds (720 x intensity) degrees of haptic feedback. As opposed to rumble, which is (1 x intensity) degrees.
@Seasick Pirate How is rumble an upgrade? All it does is shake. This has directional feedback. It also directly stimulates the most tactilely sensitive part of what is holding the controller, which amplifies the perceived magnitude of its effect.
I just commented on the story about his Kinect-powered Horse bonding game that MS needs to get rid of him. And I read this less than three days later. That being the case, I have to wonder how voluntary this was on Molyneux's part. I'm sure MS respects him a great deal, but when you under deliver so consistently, I don't think it matters who you are.
My guess is that Molyneux is still brilliant, but there was something about the "fit" between him and MS that didn't pan out and led to mediocre results.
@eat it While I in no way condone food pictures, if push came to shove, I'd rather look at a well executed meal than read a #sworcery hashtag. If I was on low-bandwidth device, I suppose you got me, though. I'd go for the #sworcery tweet.
