DoE forecasts far cheaper, lighter, longer-lasting EV batteries by 2015

Jul 22nd 2010 3:50PM (Engadget)
@paul34 It's made better by tax expenditures by you and me.

Sure, the battery pack may cost $4,000 in 2015, but if we keep printing money to spend on R&D in these so-called "green jobs" then who knows how much they'll cost when adjusted for inflation? I don't think the federal government needs to be "Transforming America's transportation sector", especially when they've already demonstrated they don't comprehend what they're doing when they make small changes. They want cars to get safer (read: heavier) AND get increased miles per gallon.

Bettery technology isn't there yet people... Use gas/diesel, let's use more of our own natural resources instead of importing them, and use small, targeted incentives to spur innovation in a more controlled fashion such as the current tax-writeoff system for EV purchases. Scrap the rest of the governments intervention in "green energy". It's easy to say "Sure, spend 200 Billion on pretending to make transportation more environmentally friendly" when your taxes aren't rising. Eventually your taxes will rise to pay for this crap, and you won't even remember what your money is paying for...Got an extra 10% of your income lying around doing nothing nowadays? Be prepared to make some cuts then...

Exhaust noise only helps you be heard from people behind you, which means they can see you. You (the rider) are responsible in making sure that you are noticed by cars in front of you, or that they can't hit you (proper positioning).

The "Loud Pipes Save Lives" BS is just there for 'Bikers' who want the attention they get at stoplights and bars. 'Motorcyclists', of which I am one, don't need loud pipes to save lives.

Kin One drops to $29, Two drops to $49, data plans remain silly expensive

Jun 28th 2010 6:39PM (Engadget)
This is all the phone my wife needs, as she love facebook/myspace/etc. But she freaks out about my work sponsored data plan on my smartphone, so no way she'd pay $30 a month herself. A real shame they can't make it 10-20 a month instead of $30.

Dealing more with the intended market, how many households do you think can seriously afford $30 a month per kid for these things on top of txt fees, etc.

Pioneer lowers prices on Elite A/V receivers again, the well-heeled respond with derision

Jun 24th 2010 6:04PM (Engadget)
@Spiny Norman How great do you think your ipod output would look even with the component cables outputting 480p? Sometimes softening the image a bit through component can actually help things. Not often, but occasionally using an older tech and then having a decent upscaler perform doubling or quadrupling to uprez the content looks better.

Irregardless, no intelligent person is going to hook up their ipod up to their 65" plasma and expect anything better than dvd quality at best.

@Spiny Norman Most of us like to have the ability to play an old system like VHS, or an old console without having to move the TV and plug into the back. Even more so for those of us with front projection. Upscaling old content is an important feature...

@durangojim Bluetooth voice dialing, at least until it updates to 2.2

Really no excuse why it didn't have this feature in 2.0, let alone why this phone can't ship with 2.2

Trade in a PS2, get $100 off a PS3

Apr 28th 2009 3:46PM (Joystiq)
You people aren't thinking about the obvious. They're likely to sell some new/used games in the same sale as the PS3, and they may sell accessories/warranties as well.

PS2 = ~$70
3x games = ~$10 each or $30
maybe 2x new or used games ~$20 profit each or $40
extra controller $15 profit or so
So there's $155 for a total of $55 profit. Of course this disregards overhead and processing expenses, but it's still a positive move for them in a big way.

Once you find out that you can't play any of your old games on the new PS3, then you'll trade those in for additional profit. All around it's a pretty big win, and that's before you realize that they already make money off of selling the console for $400 (not much, but everything counts).
