Reggie on why used games are not his problem

Apr 1st 2009 12:58PM (Joystiq)
I can think of plenty of stores that sell used media like CDs, DVDs, books... but none are national chains like Gamestop is. Most are single-location, and a few are local or regional chains that may have 2 or 3 stores in different places around town.

GDC09: Watch The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks in action

Ugh. Guys, you need more than 8 sides on your polygon if you're trying to approximate a circle.

Behind the scenes with Guitar Hero: Metallica

Mar 25th 2009 2:07PM (Joystiq)
If KRK's greying hair makes you feel old, consider these facts:

1. Cliff Burton died more than 22 years ago.
2. Rob Trujillo has now been a member of Metallica for longer than Cliff ever was.

Toys R Us testing the waters of the used games business

I wonder if this is a sign of returning to the old days of TRU, where the products were arranged in endless straight aisles instead of in a big store-sized loop configuration, where consoles were kept behind glass next to the boomboxes and Synsonics guitar with built-in amplifier, and buying a game meant taking a piece of paper up to the register, then waiting 20 minutes for some pimply slob to answer the service bell at the electronics pickup booth.

Get a grip: Nintendo reveals Wii 'Classic Controller Pro'

Still no 3x2 face button configuration? I'll pass.

Mapping the C-buttons to the right stick only works well for some, not all, N64 games. And the 2x2 layout is awkward for Genesis controls, of both the 3-button and 6-button varieties.

This is a reasonable request I'm making. It's not like I'm asking for a full numeric keypad so I can play Intellivision/Colecovision/5200/Jaguar games or anything.

This information only makes me with Homestarrunner.com would finish up and release the 10th and final stage of "STINKOMAN 20X6", already...

Mario Kart: Source PC mod uses 'the best parts of each' MK game

Jan 23rd 2009 10:04AM (Joystiq)
Even if the game doesn't use a single bitmap or texture taken from Nintendo's games, there could still be a copyright violation if any level design or other creative aspects of the original games have been reproduced.

Furthermore, having identifiable Nintendo-owned characters like Mario, Bowser, et al within the game is a pretty clear trademark violation, even if there is no copyright violation. It's tough to say just how much they'd have to tweak the characters to be clear on that point; would we even be discussing this game if it was "Great-Giana-Sisters Kart: Source"?

Wiikly Wares: Castlevania III takes Jungle Speed on Planet Pachinko

I don't suppose they found a way to work the VRC6-based soundtrack into the U.S. Virtual Console release of CVIII, huh? The 2A03-only music we had to settle for was so weak and thin compared to the Japanese version's sawtoothed, 8-channel majesty...

Telling stories: What's up with lame endings?

Dec 23rd 2008 4:27PM (Joystiq)
Mega Man 2, an example of a good ending? Really?

It was at best a variation on the standard "enemy fortress/spaceship/island self-destructs, hero walks away, roll credits" ending that was bog standard through most of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. (The variation in MM2's case? It takes him an entire year to walk home.)

Mega Man 3 had a far more satisfying ending.

Metallica debuts Guitar Hero: Metallica trailer

Dec 19th 2008 5:35PM (Joystiq)
Holy Christ, I just realized that Metallica existed for only four years with Cliff, and has now existed for twenty-two years without him.

And his presence is still sorely missed.
