Microsoft: PGR5 could be driven by Forza dev

May 22nd 2008 4:29PM (Joystiq)
PGR is somewhere of a mix between an arcade racer and a sim racer. Not quite as arcadey as a Need For Speed, but nowhere near the other side of the spectrum of Gran Turismo. Forza is purely a sim racer and a Gran Turismo competitor. Personally, as a Forza, sim-racer fan, I don't like this idea. Unless Turn10 hires a bunch of new staff, it either means Forza less often, or with less new features. A combined PGR/Forza sounds even worse, with a game too sim-like to please the PGR fans, but too arcadey for the Forza fans. Same thing happened when EA bought the Nascar exclusivity a few years back. EA had the more arcadey game before and tried to add more sim elements, pleasing no one.

Team Fortress 2 beta now available

I got a similar system wunderbred, 2.4 GHz, 9800 Pro, 512 ram. Been meaning to get a new pc, but haven't gotten around to it. Anyway, I was running it at 1280x768 at around medium or a little below medium settings with a great frame rate. Haven't had the opportunity yet to really play with the settings to see how much higher I can go, but the source engine has always been very good at handling older computers.

We destroy a Blu-ray Disc

Jan 19th 2007 7:16PM (Joystiq)
As someone who has learned the hard way that buying used dvds off of ebay is not a smart idea, just because a disk loads, doesn't mean it isn't scratched. The disks will play until they reach the scratched portions, then skip or freeze. I'm not saying that's what was happening here and I don't know enough about the differences in the materials and layers of DVD and blu-ray to say anything conclusive, but a loading disk doesn't mean a perfectly functioning disk. I do realize that those disks were pretty damaged before completely crapping out, so I guess they should be commended for that.

Micro Center extends Xbox 360 rebate thru holidays

I fully agree with the hate for the Fairfax store from no. 8. Buying a laptop from them was an experience from hell that I wouldn't ever want to repeat. The employees knew absolutely nothing about laptops and could only read me the specs. When I wanted any clarification on anything they would just repeat me the specs on the card right in front of me over and over. After deciding on one, I am not exaggerating when I was offered a service plan at least 30 times. The employee even brought over a manager and another employee to try to strong arm me into buying a warranty. After about 20 minutes of explaining I didn't want a warranty, then there was the 20 minutes of trying to sell me laptop accessories. When they finally let me get to the register and the cashier tried to convince me to buy a warranty I had had it and just started a stream of obscenities at the employees around me. I can tolerate the EB employees telling me about pre-orders since they only do it once and forget about it. It shouldn't take me 2 hours to buy a laptop when I come into the store only considering 3 different laptops.

150 line up for PS3 in Rockville, MD

There are more people waiting there than the supply because a local radio station, DC101, is giving some PS3s away.

Gaming at the Olympics? It could happen [update 2]

May 31st 2006 6:23PM (Joystiq)
It's not possible for this to ever happen because of the rules of what qualifies as a sport for the Olympics. Some of these rules include a sport cannot contain a motor or mechanical propulsion, so don't expect to ever see any car racing, and a sport must be played by a certain number of countries. Also, a sport must actually be an athletic sport, not a game. While it could be argued that there is not much physical exertion in some sports, such as curling or shooting, they still are sports.

Oops! Brain training doesn't help aging brains

Apr 24th 2006 5:35PM (Joystiq)
To Ron Smith: "15. The problem is that they used a UVa professor, which everyone knows suck. They should have asked a hokie."

This is in contrast to the great research being done at Virginia Tech, such as the report from a few days ago that said that car accidents are caused by people not paying attention to the road.

Sorry, I couldn't let an anti-UVa post slide by. A bad review from the WSJ is very bad for Brain Age since many of the people Nintendo is trying to reach is the WSJ crowd. A glowing review could have convinced a lot of WSJ readers to buy a DS, which could have helped to give Brain Age the same success here that it had in Japan. Either way, I'm still having a lot of fun with Brain Age and it was well worth the $20.
