Apple scraps iOS-like slider tabs in latest Mac OS X Lion build

Apr 30th 2011 2:59AM (TUAW.com)
Hopefully they'll roll back the universally-reviled "realistic" iCal interface.

Otherwise, I'm awaiting Mission Control with excitement. It finally makes Dashboard, Expose, and Spaces conceptually simple and usable. Can't wait!

Mac OS X Lion feature 'Reading List' to compete with Instapaper and ReadItLater

Apr 30th 2011 1:33AM (TUAW.com)
If this also integrates the Reader feature of saving all pages of an article at once, it will be a godsend. I love Instapaper, but it does me no good whatsoever when it only saves page 1 of a 10 page article.

Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition II: 6 TB of low-cost storage

Apr 14th 2011 9:26PM (TUAW.com)
The concerns on disassembly seem misguided, as the intent is clearly that you *don't* mess with the drives inside. This is not intended to be the same as other drive arrays that are designed to replace/upgrade capacity as time goes on.

And if you do put this in RAID-0, definitely get a second for backup. Remember that RAID-0 is *more* failure-prone than a single drive, since losing either drive in the case will cause you to lose data across both drives. Of course, by the time you buy two of them you could probably about buy a Synology unit and a bunch of 2TB drives.

All of this said - it's hard to argue with the price if you just need a huge chunk of storage.

Apple releases Xcode 4.0.2 (4A2002a) to developers

Apr 14th 2011 3:13PM (TUAW.com)
Great. Another 4.5GB point update that doubtless touched less than 1% of that data. Sure not downloading that on the 1.5Mbps connection I find myself on today...

Xcode 4.0.1 is now available

Same situation here! I'm sorry it's happening to you, but glad it's not only me.

Happy 10th birthday, Mac OS X!

Mar 24th 2011 9:06AM (TUAW.com)
First overhaul since... 1996? Mac OS 7.6 does not count as a new OS! Everything from the birth of the Mac through 2000 was an evolution of the same increasingly creaky codebase.

Mac OS X was the first truly new OS for the Mac since the Mac in 1984.

Development courseware updated for Xcode 4

Eek - a damn shame, or else I'd be quite interested. I haven't picked up an IDE in a decade and would love to get back to it - but Apple moves so fast that it's hard to get any current usable documentation.

Terminally Geeky: use automatic login more securely

Mar 7th 2011 12:01PM (TUAW.com)
With a firmware password, they can't do that (or boot to Safe Mode, or...). In day-to-day use you'll never see that password, but you do have to deal with logging in.

Terminally Geeky: use automatic login more securely

Very interesting method - I may start using something similar on my laptop as well. I have a couple questions, though:
1) Why the use of AbandonProcessGroup in the launchd plist? This isn't a key I'm familiar with.
2) Isn't ".loginhook" reserved by the window manager? Wouldn't it make more sense to just drop a shell script into /usr/local/bin? That way you also don't have to worry about path differences between users.

Opera for Mac includes BitTorrent functionality

Mar 3rd 2011 11:50AM (TUAW.com)
Isn't this article the very definition of FUD?

Nothing bad has happened - if anything needed to be written, it should be positive as they did approve the app, showing that the Mac App Store is looser by design than the iOS one.

*IF* they pull it, bring out the pitchforks at that time. In the meantime, stop with the FUD.
