360 HD DVD add-on coming to US, Europe in mid-November for $200/?200/£130

@Keef, 19

Just because a TV has VGA doesn't mean it supports 1080p by it. A lot of VGA inputs just support standard computer resolutions that don't reach up to 1080p.

@Pete

The SXRD's that came out earlier this year support 1080p through the VGA, 1080i through component. HP's Pavillion line of DLP TV's accept 1080p through component and VGA. There was also a Westinghouse monitor (LCD I think) released earlier this year that supported 1080p via VGA. I know the SXRD has a true 1920x1080 picture (no wobbulation (960(x2)x1080) like the HP & Toshiba DLPs) so if I was buying a TV today, that's definitely the one I'd go with.

I'm not sure where I stand on this. For how great everyone seems to think this is, this is essentially Microsft playing catch-up with Sony... and I don't know how good that is. If both systems cost the same, I'll be going with the PS3. The integrated HDMI is what seals the deal for me, and I think that in terms of shelf-life, the PS3 will have have more to offer in terms of power/longevity with the Cell/Blu-Ray combo.

Either way, the fact that Xbox 360 will do 1080p over VGA with seemingly RCA audio is a deal breaker for me. I am one of the people who's ready for 1080p, and with that high-end video I need high-end -OPTICAL- audio. Maybe such a cable will be released for the 360...

Quite frankly Microsoft rushing the 360 to market and tacking on all these upgrades later, I just wish they would've held out an delivered it all at once. Wasn't MS just downplaying 1080p a month ago?

And @crono141:
Reports at the Tokyo game show reported very very very quick load times with the PS3. While you're playing games, they rarely have to load data, they usually just stream music. But by Sony making the PS3 by default have a HDD they are able to stream & cache data off the BD-ROM making load times much less. The PS3 essentially has a page memory file like windows that can be used as virtual ram. That lessen the load times significantly. It's not all about DVD/BD-ROM reading speed... well, it would be if the PS3 didn't have a built into hard drive.

Will I be the only person to have a Wii, 360, and PS3? Seems like it.

PS3 worth its weight in Uranium

@BIAS

I think all the comments are directed at me. Maybe I don't read as much Joystiq as I should to understand the depth of their slander... but to the person who said (paraphrasing) "joystiq is a blog, not a news site". WTF? Really? Heh, cause I swear it was a news site in blog format. I mean, looking through the pages of the site, I'm not finding too many things about how their day was, or how their gf dumped them or how they hate their boss. :)

It just seems like everyone is giving the PS3 a hard time and I just don't think they deserve it. Microsoft didn't do much today besides show a 2:30 minute halo 3 trailer (with no gameplay), announce that GTA4 will be on the 360 too but with episodic content (but still on the PS3 as well mind you), and let us know that we can be logged into Xbox Live Anywhere all the time.

That doesn't really strike me as big a deal. Call me crazy.

Nintendo's press conference kicked ass. Looks like it could be awesome, but um, heh... did anyone else see the guys on G4 playing the Wii games? Of course I'm sure they'll fix it, but on games like red steel the controller wasn't working half the time. They'd swing 3 for every once in the game.

I just think it terms of balance and bias, this past 2 days snapshot of Joystiq hasn't seemed to great to me. It didn't help when they published those crazy ass poll results either, heh. :)

PS3 worth its weight in Uranium

@MosquitoControl

A couple things. I think in terms of power, just in terms of Moore's law if not flat out logic the PS3 is/should be more powerful than the Xbox 360. Maybe not by much, maybe no by any, but it -should- be more powerful.

I know that a lot of people might not like Blu-Ray, and that it even could be a console generation ahead of its time but the fact is that you are getting something for your money. I -totally- get why consumer wouldn't be happy with it as Sony is essentially strong arming their Blu-Ray player into homes, but if people don't like it, then I guess no one will buy it.

For me, I've already bought an HDTV and plan on buying another as soon the companies properly integrate 1080p into their displays. I have every intention of watching High Definition Video content on my TV be it via Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. When you look at (with current costs) a Premium Xbox 360 + HD-DVD add-on VS. a PS3 (w/ Blu-Ray) they cost virtually the same thing. Without an Xbox 360 price drop, the PS3 might even be cheaper (though I'm sure the price will drop).

The real question is whether Microsoft can get out an HD-DVD add-on for $99, $129, or $149. $199 would be a no deal I'm sure.

I understand the lack of choice, but when you look at the features of the PS3 VS Xbox 360 w/HD-DVD the prices are going to be about the same.

When I look at the best of the best in terms of graphics we;ve seen, the best stuff from the PS3 seems to one up the best from the Xbox 360. I really haven't seen anything on the 360 that's close to that 15 minutes Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer. Sweet mother of god!

So when I say Price v. Functionality, I'm looking at a PS3 vs. Xbox 360 (w/HD-DVD). And I get why people are upset about the extra cost. But 2-5 years now when the cost of the Blu-Ray drives and Cell chips start falling we could all be singing Sony's praises..

Or maybe no one will have bought the PS3 because they couldn't afford it. :)

PS3 worth its weight in Uranium

@Mark D:

I really don't know about that. It just seems to me that Joystiq is losing some perspective on the whole idea of cost v. functionality. I guess it just comes down to me not caring about Joystiqs opinion, and wanting news. Not 3 or 4 posts in succession complaining about the PS3's cost. Just like I don't need to see 3 posts in a row about how Nintendo still brings out the same games today (franchise wise) that they did 20 years ago.

Just news thanks. :)

A certain bias seems to be coming through in Joystiq's blogging and readership that's really kind of too bad.

PS3 worth its weight in Uranium

Not to anything away from such an idiotic pointless post. But terrorist want -ENRICHED- Uranium. They don't want chunks of uranium from the ground.

They have to build a nuclear power plant like Iran is trying to do before the Uranimum is worth anything to a terrorist.

But I suppose they could still stone their wives with it. Or perhaps kill their daughters for marrying a non-muslim man.

Who am I kidding. Non-enriched Uranium has many uses!!!

PS3 boomerang controller tossed, doesn't come back

May 9th 2006 2:33AM (Joystiq)
I'm at the same time excited and disappointed by Sony's press conference. I was excited by everything, even the two sku's were fine -UNTIL- I found out that the lower model lacked HDMI interface (critical for 1080p gaming).

I still think that when push comes to shove, the PS3 is going to sell like fire when it comes out, even with the higher price point.

BUT to Sony's credit, they thought of an Xbox Live centralized network before Microsoft unveiled theirs, and they've also spent millions of dollars researching motion sensitive technologies (like Wii). To Sony's detriment however, the only things they seemed to have successfully implemented was the use of the DVD w/ PS2, and the shift to 3D graphics from 2D with the PS1.

They unfortunately miscalculated horribly when it came to user interface and online gaming.

Ya win some you lose some. I wouldn't right Sony off yet. I'm personally picking up the Wii, skipping the 360 and going for the PS3.

Sony has made many believers with the PS1 & PS2, and inspite of the kneejerk reactions of gamers (many who seem to be poor, heh, kidding, no I'm not :) I think many people will be ready to jump on board the PS3 bandwagon in time for launch.

Xbox 360 needs to do something -SERIOUS- between now and November to grab a hold of the market share. They need a killer app before the PS3 launch, not at the PS3 launch.

The real PlayStation 3 controller revealed

Yes, the ripped off the "Wiimote", but can you blame them? What are they supposed to do??? Just stick around with the same old shitty Xbox360/PS3 dual analog?!?!? I don't think anyone can blame them for what they did.

And for those that say Sony -ALWAYS- copies, they were the first ones to bring 3D graphics to the home consoles. And if you think I'm kidding, just look at Sega. They thought the world was going to stay 2D (hence the Saturn's tech.) but Sony went -ALL- 3D and won! Nintendo soon followed Sony in that regard. Not the best example. :)
